First thing to recognize is that this is all a mind game because recruiters are not going to be in control of your salary - they are just the information pass through. So I use this question as an opportunity to pivot and ask what the salary range is, occasionally going as far as to say "let me answer your question with a question". Based upon what they come back with I'll say that I'm comfortable with something in that range (but give no addl detail), or volunteer my current salary as a number they need to get up to or beat. It can feel gross - kind of like you are haggling on a used car - but at the end of the day it is a business transaction. So fight for what you're worth!
At first ask, I typically defer and say I‘d like to know more about the full package/benefits and/or job responsibilities before stating a range. That’s given me the opportunity to gather more info and tailor my salary range ask more closely to what I think the job should fetch rather than just basing it off current pay. In the event you are severely underpaid at your current gig, that’ll set you up for better success. Also, resources like Glassdoor may have data on what the established range is for the position you’re interested in and that can help inform your ask, too. Best of luck!
Never disclose your current salary, a) you should never give anyone that leverage and b) you don’t have to disclose it and c) it always serves in the best interest of the candidate to ask for the range which recruiters are required to provide. You don’t want to lose the advantage of hiring managers or recruiters being able to low ball you. Also what you make now is not relevant to your new role. They have a predetermined budget regardless of what you make currently. The two variables are not dependent upon each other. Hope this helps!
How about when it’s a requirement in an online application?
