What do you think are the most important skills for your role? Have they differed since you started out?

Communication and management skills. I don't think so. They remained just the same but I could say that I learned a lot of skills in the process.

I'd say interpersonal skills and engagement skills. They are still the most important skills for me since I started out.

Hmm. It would be organizational and project management skills. I think they remained the same.

Heaps and heaps of patience. A lot of your job revolves around interacting on the internet with folks who often have anonymity on their side. Which means they aren’t always demonstrating their best behavior and you’re the one charged with dealing with it.

In any community, even ones that seem like they are fairly homogenous, you’re going to run up against a host of different personalities. That can pose a challenge in knowing how to communicate a strong message that becomes personal for so many different temperaments. A skilled community manager is empathetic and able to see their brand through the perspective of all the varying personalities that are drawn to it in order to craft messages that resonate with everyone.

As the community manager, you are the public face and ambassador for your company. Which requires an innate understanding of not just human interactions, but business interactions as well. That’s why successful community managers have at least a working knowledge of business development and public relations, as well as above-par negotiation abilities.

You must have a clear forward-thinking and vision. We must have our finger on the pulse in a landscape that’s catering to increasingly short attention spans. It’s our role to engage our communities in conversation and help build strong community foundations. To do that, a strong community manager should have a sense of what her community needs in the present and what it will need in the future. It’s not a matter of seeing the future, rather of being able to make informed decisions that move the dial.

I would say the two most important are organization and strategy. We have so many events that require a close eye to detail. I have so many different calendars and to do lists

Compassion and empathy are important. As a community manager you have to be able to understand the members of your community and figuring out their needs to make the community better for them

Are there any debt consolidation options for a professional family man with a decent credit score, who's let high interest credit card debt get out of hand? I get the mailers that entice with a low advertised rate, and then the offer comes back at something slightly less than what I am already paying. I am thinking something along the lines of a bank that I can talk to, and explain exactly where the money is going, not being apposed to a direct deposit to the card companies themselves.

How normal is it to be pulled off a trial team because you tell your boss you are moving after trial? I have a trial coming up first week of Oct. This case has been my baby, and I’m going to try it with my boss. I tell my boss up front that, for family reasons, I’ve gotten a new job and will be moving to another city two weeks after trial will likely end. He then gives my trial witnesses to another attorney, but is still going to make me do grunt work. Is he unreasonable or am I?
