It takes a year to accumulate to any new place. La and San Diego are different. The weather, the food options are fewer, the traffic is less by far takes max 30 mins to get anywhere, there a a lot of Costco’s, Walmarts and Targets. People are relaxed, the dress code is what ever you want. San Diego is slower and less diverse.
Salaries might be low here, while the cost of living is high. We accept "sunshine dollars" as payment and figure out how to make it work. There are many transplants from the east and midwest here, so if you get homesick, you can stop by your college's alumni club or a pub that supports your favorite sports team.
“Sunshine dollars” haha I’ve never heard that but so true 😆
Expect a drop in food quality overall. There are certainly exceptions, but in general, there is a lot of corporate meals and otherwise subpar mom and pop establishments.
You can find plenty of great food including Mexican food. The problem is that there are also a lot of mediocre places you need to filter out.
Brace for some culture shock. People act differently here than in Los Angeles. Be prepared for less hustle and bustle.
Leave your winter and rain gear behind, you won't need them. Although San Diegans will be wrapped up like Eskimos and whining about being cold when temperatures reach the low 60's. Also, if you have to travel somewhere in the rain, allow yourself twice as much time as normal since we will lose our minds and trigger accidents on every freeway.
It’s a big city with a small town feel. Get out and explore the wide variety of neighborhoods that surround the city itself. There is a lot to discover and do. San Diego is nicer, cleaner and more relaxed than LA but we certainly have a sizable unhoused population. With that said, it’s one of the best places to live in the nation.
We moved to SD from LA. It could be quieter here, depending on where you came from in LA. It’s so much easier to get around here. One thing I couldn’t get over in LA was how complicated it was to meet up with friends. Even people who lived within 20 minutes, there’d always be unexpected traffic which made keeping friendships a pain. One thing that does suck is that from LA, you can fly direct to just about anywhere. It’s so much harder to find direct flights here. But I love SD a lot more than LA
Dating scene is f’ed up
Will say it’s better than in LA, though!
Transients are common. We live in a city that is located in a temperate climate. The city is attempting to cull, assist, and shelter the homeless, but it is clearly failing. You will come across the homeless while roaming. And some areas are worse than others.
I mean, this issue is comparatively better here than in LA. So if anything that’s on the pros column when moving from LA to SD.
As someone who moved from LA recently to sd, I miss LA a lot. The food is better, nightlife is better in LA. Sd feels just too slow for me. But it’s also put life into perspective too. I think anywhere you go, networking and finding a core group of friends is the key. Best of luck!
The schools are very hit and miss. Don't believe anything you read on the typical websites for that kind of information. Also, the pot holes are atrocious!
