What is common travel expectations for mid-market PE Ops roles (Lead level) that is fairly lean? When is it spikey-er or quieter? I’m looking for a pretty significant downgrade on travel from consulting (maybe ~2-4 nights a month on average) and trying to gauge?

for MM PE firms expect mostly high-touch hand holding for value creation programs. dependent upon capability level of the portco's and your firms value creation approach.

generally for our firm we anticipate (1) at least 8 nights/mth for steady-state portco's and board meetings, (2) at least 4 nights/week for the first 10-12 weeks for ramp up newly closed portco's to kick-off the value creation programs, (3) beyond the 8/mth there will be additional for pre-deal pitching & diagnostic support for aligning on VCP prior to deal closure.

quite frankly I personally believe 2-4 nights/mth is unreasonable. anyone who's run implementation or change management knows this is going to be v rare and challenging to be effective. how do you expect to build trust and influence cross the board, across bottom frontline and top management teams by being a stranger who dips in & out each month. I'd expect that for Deal team leaders who dip in for the monthly Exco or quarterly board meetings, but not for PE ops - let's be real.

Great points. Appreciate the perspective as I try to understand these roles more from the outside in

2-4 nights a month sounds reasonable, and very light for consulting.

Agree with MD1, middle market—esp if heavy in services or distribution/supply businesses—requires lots of hands on ops exposure. Any successful MM PE shop will know that. I’ve personally spent weeks on the road going in between 2 portcos before as well. Saying 2-4 nights per month seem either disingenuous or just not doing the job to the level of whats needed

like

Oh gotcha I misread as if a MM fund was telling you 2-4 for expectations

like

I’m anywhere from 50-75% of the time on the road. If we acquire a new platform, I expect to be there weekly for 6 months or so

My SO adds very little to our relationship. She has a dead end job. I cook. I work. I oversee finances. I plan trips. She doesn’t have a voice in the relationship. I’ve asked her to give her perspective but she always defaults to mine bc she thinks I’m smarter/worldly. She feels intimated by me and my social circle. Lately, I’ve found myself thinking for her. Anticipating her wants and needs and then adjusting my behavior to meet them. Which she appreciates but it’s frustrating 29M 27F
