What is it about becoming a CCO that people feel the need to try ultra hard to look ~ edgy ~
I'm all for being yourself but 99% of the time, the most ridiculously dressed guy in the agency with a cowboy hat, platform boots and bloomers is an ECD or above who doesn't look like that in any photos prior to their role

The worst is the 40+ year-olds who try to copy gen Z, painting their nails, wearing dangly earrings, pink hair, a trader joe's bag and ultra baggy pants. Super cringe

Be yourself, yes, but that wasn't yourself for the last 20 years of your career. It doesn't look ~ ultra creative ~ it looks like a midlife crisis

likefunnysmart

Well, there’s different levels to this.

Our industry is so youth culture focused, and ultimately ageist, that it makes sense that 40somethings dress like 20somethings. Usually pink hair on women and dubious styling on men.

But the more interesting thing, IMO, is that there feels like a pretty straight line between the expectation of your creative superiority as a ECD/CCO…and feeling like you have to present yourself more “creatively” to maintain the image.

Also, I think there’s some level of authenticity in branding yourself “current” or relevant regardless of age and expressing that thru image. Years are just a number! If you’ve always been trendy it makes sense your image evolves as trends evolve. But there’s a danger of becoming a trope and looking ridiculous - so finding your own style vs mimicking a generational look is the balance to achieve. If I were an ECD Id be using my salary to purchase a couple of trendy accessories the younger gen covets but can’t yet afford rather than going all out to mimick the hallmarks of their generation. Subtlety, authenticity and originality are more likely to inspire respect than copying. Also, I wouldn’t care too much about what others think and would want to project that versus someone who is obviously and desperately trying too hard.

Clients don’t want the team in charge of their creativity walking into the room looking like they are their accountants, cost consultants, or legal team. They are paying for creativity from the start, and CCOs often take on figurehead personas so that the agency’s creativity is front and center.

smartfunny

@P1 - Back in the 60s, agencies could flunk an office visit if the clients didn't smell weed on the "creative floor."

idk about where you are but in london creative leaders just wear black

Maybe they just feel free to do it at that level.

Can I still get my nose pierced?

If the person was always an eccentric creative type I give them a pass (even if it’s a little corny). If they were a normie all their life and in their midlife adopt some ‘edgy’ look then judge harshly.

Women especially are increasingly “invisible” and pushed aside as we age :(

so I don’t judge people dying their hair brown or pink. 🤎🩷 Or those getting botox. They’re getting their ROI.

Howdy…I need a sanity check! As part of my previous role, I reported security non-compliance and gross security misrepresentations. For my valiant efforts I was laid off (despite being a protected whistleblower) and my reports were buried. Everything I did was in line with my responsibilities. I was extremely concerned that systems housing personal credit data on all US consumers were not adequately protected. I essentially risked my job to protect data and I’m not sure if it mattered.
