Wanted to highlight Prudential Financial’s hiring practices. They rescinded my offer once I attempted to negotiate the salary. The official reason given was that I didn’t “sound excited enough”.
They then admittedly gave the offer to someone who was less qualified. There were other red flags throughout the job offer process that the HR team should overall be ashamed of.

I just went through this exercise (Austin - NYC / SF) 2.5x-3x, remember state taxes. Chicago probably more like 1.5x-2x.
Generally speaking unless there is a business need your salary will not be adjusted for relocation you prompted
2x if you want to have a 2br assume at least 4K in rent for something in a less prime neighborhood - more like 5-6k if you want something nice
You need to adjust your expectations. You won't have the same lifestyle in New York that you have in Dallas. Especially around housing. The live-alone lifestyle in NYC inherently involves having a studio.
Take 10% in state and local taxes alone for nyc before any differences in rent price 😔
Thanks for all the feedback. have a wife & 5 months old daughter. Hence the need for space. Leaning more towards Chicago to have a better/cost effective lifestyle.
Chicago isn't that much more than Dallas. Can't get as much house as Dallas in the city but can get something reasonable. NYC is way more expensive. 20% more would be my aim for Chicago. 60% at least for NYC.
Assume new offer.
Chicago totally doable. 3BD/2.5BA in the city (Logan) 2200 sqft = $2500 mortgage, taxes, HOA
Planning to live in the city ?
@M1.. May be start with City, eventually looking to move to the burbs.
Thanks D1, BCG2.
