Post it notes. 😂

Color coded master notebook and hand written calendar.

dated pages with notes on what I did during the day for specific cases and details of assignments with date assigned and deadlines.

It also holds notes of who I sent specific projects to (partner, other associate, client, or paralegal), when, how, and if I’m waiting for a response (client report, motion, letter, discovery, etc.). Each person is color tab coded so it serves as an instant visual reminder as to who I need to follow up with to meet current deadlines, including myself/my own tasks.

I've noticed that my coworkers tend to work more on their own than with others, even when they're all in the office. Is this normal? I feel like it would be helpful for everyone to talk about their projects more often—I mean, what if someone else has solved the same problem you're trying to solve already?

Hi everyone,
One of my friends, he made a switch just 6 months back hoping he would get a better work environment a better package, but now he is just frustrated with the working environment, being a backend developer he has been asked to just fix bugs for almost 5 months now and that too in javascript without any KTs or any other trainings when he clearly did mention in the interview that he does not have prior knowledge on javascript.

What should he do? Any suggestions?

I’m a big law attorney and thinking about getting my real estate license (brother is thinking about the same thing, so we’re thinking to go into some RE investing together). Thoughts? I know my firm wouldn’t ever let me actually represent someone as an RE agent, so then I’m wondering if there’s really any value to me getting a license?

Okay. Possibly a stupid question BUT Imma ask anyway.

Can someone just explain how you plan out how much to bill so you can make sure it’s not a mad scramble at the end of year? I’m moving from a firm where I was lacking in any kind of mentorship. No one ever just sat down and explained the most efficient way to track/measure your hours to confirm that you are on track.

Is there just a secret excel spreadsheet that all lawyers have and I just missed the memo???

HELP.

Can I export a list with all emails I sent for the month? I would like to use it to compare to my billed time to make sure I don’t miss anything. Usually I go through my sent inbox but it has so much extra info so it’s not a quick scan. Plus outlook does weird things sometimes like combines conversations so I only see most recent sent item in that convo. Alternatively, do you have a good way confirming you caught all of your email time?

Any tips on leaving a firm “correctly”? Was about to go “of counsel” with my firm of 6 years, but then another firm whose partners I really respect (and personally like) offered me a partnership position. I predict my current bosses will *flip* (cut off file access immediately, try to beat me to calling my clients, etc.), so how do I set myself up for a successful transition?

When did you know your firm wasn't right for you? I'm not sure if it's just the stress of being a new attorney with a family or if my job isn't the right fit. I can't stay late because my kids need me and I can't work on the weekends because I have to maintain my house and take care of my kids. I'm being constantly told to work harder, stay later, etc but it's not practical. Or am I not approaching this with the right mindset?
