I’ve had flights cancelled multiple times with Delta too. Doesn’t sound as bad as AC, though. My guess is - pilots and flight attendant shortages because they left the industry during Covid, due to lifting mask mandates, a lot more flight attendants getting sick?
There was a looming pilot shortage before covid, and the problem was exacerbated when the airlines let staff go during covid. “I think” most staff were actually bought off and not furloughed. TBH I think all the airlines simultaneously messed up by scheduling more flights than they could staff. But we will never know for sure because no airline would ever admit that. Would be a really interesting Harvard case study.
I received email from Air Canada yesterday that in an effort improve 'service' they will be reducing the amounts of flights in July and August
Way to spin it!!!
To sprinkle a little more fun insight, one of the reasons behind the pilot shortage is a lack of new grads -- the lower-hour pilots have minimums to hit before getting promoted and trained on the big birds, and they can't move up until there's a newer pilot in line to replace them.
Many older (read: high salary) pilots got retired out during the last 2 years to save money and furloughs.
Many aspiring pilots got their training pushed back by a year or more due to covid, so it'll take some time before they catch up to the regular system.
It’s all the shortages form pilots walking out due to draconian rule of having to take the shot. Medical freedom!!!!

I just read an article on Travel Off Path about this…Air Canada just cancelled 9,000 flights for July/Aug because they cannot provide the standard level of service they need to meet the travel demand, or in their words, “maintain a level of operational stability”. Don’t know why they would sell those flights in the first place, but there’s a good article about it posted today on traveloffpath.com
Had a similar experience with Delta last weekend so it is def across the board. I’ve also read there is a shortage of air traffic controllers causing additional challenges. I also saw somewhere that on the best fully staffed days, most airports are still over booked on all flights so there is just very little room for disruption and a lot of disruption at the moment.
Same. Funny that I’ve visited 3 Latin American countries the last couple weeks and the troubles stop when I switch from Delta to local carriers. No cancelled flights. No luggage issues. Just happy people and on time arrivals - even in remote areas. Guess they didn’t get the memo.

? What are they doing?
AC not providing hotel vouchers is not a new thing. Has happened to many of my guests stuck at Pearson during snowstorms, maybe 10 yrs ago. I told them to complain via twitter, it’s the only way 😂🤣 honestly pandemic or not, AC has always sucked and so I’m not all that shocked to hear this unfortunately

I know a number of people who were recently hired as flight attendants. Part of it is definitely staffing shortages as they haven't been able to ramp back up after the pandemic pause where I'm sure many left the industry after they were laid off.
Yes, a lot of people took their early retirement during covid and now airlines can’t get back to pre-pandemic staffing levels.

No idea but I can pretty much guarantee they will issue you an apology
