Real data analyst roles are great but I’d say 90% of the work given to people employed as a ‘data analyst’ or ‘data science consultants’ (i.e. me) in a consulting firm is going to be BA work where writing pseudo code for SQL developers being as close as you’ll get to data. Unfortunately there is very little ‘real’ data science work being sold, with most firms wanting to do this stuff in house. Vast majority of roles will be BA roles on data engineering projects. Sad times
So let's do some thought experiments (meta DS/analytics here just haven't updated fishbowl)
Imagine, you go to a grocery store after a mild earthquake... No one was hurt but the owner of the store asks hmm how much will it cost to replace all my goods... You look around and realize that everything is strewn everywhere but not everything is in salvageable...
You turn to the owner and you have to get more clarification "how willing are you to replace un damaged goods, how long do I have etc" he simply says I want to spend the least amount of money you figure out the rest.
Imagine the process you would then have to take
You have sort out the goods, remove broken, spoiled out of date rotten or otherwise damaged goods, you have to sort the goods back to shelves to see what's missing, consort with a sheet to see what's the price to replace, are there any structural damages etc...
Now we have tools that make all of this possible as if you're a wizard with a wand and can figure this out by speaking by the right few lines.
You tell the owner the number and he seems confused... Seems low, he informs you he meant out of all his stores you see he owns many many stores all damaged to varying extents. Sigh.. work continues.
Being a good data analyst/scientist means that I'm thinking about how a single can of green beans is missing from aisle six in-store #275 at the same time as understanding that all of the milk in stores 2,4,5 are shot because of power loss and in my mind knowing that the frozen section of store 146 was likely poorly maintained because they were already out of date... All of that... At once thinking about all of the objects in all of the stores the implications of what's there, what's not, underlying causes, risks mitigations while not forgetting that the owner only wanted a single number X...
Oh btw the owner let's you know after everything is fixed great job but there's a hurricane coming in a few hours, I'll need you after.
Long but I think this is fairly accurate hope it helps.
