My best so far is Tequila Ocho Extra Anejo Single barrel and Madre Mezcal Ensamble.
My fav label is Ilegal (several different bottlings) as it brings the smokiness I like in scotch.
I’ll have good stuff (whiskies as well) in cocktails when I’m out, but generally I won’t waste them when mixing at home or if the bar isn’t doing really good cocktails. Well-crafted cocktails will enhance the spirit rather than hide it. If the bar is using mass-produced mixers, and doesn’t have unusual ingredients in the drinks, then it’s a good sign to keep it simple and drink neat or on the rocks.
When I’m unsure of the bar, then asking for a Rob Roy is a good test. It’s a very simple drink, has a lot of room for a good mixologist to make it really special, but it’s also fairly uncommon and easy to do poorly if you aren’t a good bartender. Even if it’s badly made, it’s still drinkable, and I know to stick to neat for the rest of the evening. If the bartender doesn’t know what it is, then I also have my answer - stick to neat or their on-menu specialties.
There are different agave plants used in mezcal - if you like em smoky look for Tobala featured on the label
