If you’re white like me it’s so important to realize that we were raised in a society where institutionalized racism is normalized, and we were born with privilege. You can’t choose the color of your skin, but you can choose to put ego aside and reflect on why this isn’t happening to me, and be vocal about being anti-racist.

Politics are probably more important than talent.
The problem arises when you want to start making more money. You can’t really have both, without being a freelancer. And that’s got its own issues.

Start saving in your early 20s. Your career and your earning potential don't last as long as you expect, and the best time to prepare for the future is when it is decades away.
this is so true! when you’re super young it seems like it’s ok to be constantly annoyed at work and as though jobs are dropping from the sky and there will always be another one.
I wish someone had sat me down when I was younger and really done a number to convince me not to go into advertising. This business has a lot of hidden costs, from mental health strain to job insecurity to the big empty hole where a sense of purpose should be LOL.

And it's not for lack of talent or not keeping up with new skills or being bad at the political side of things. It's just being a high number on a spreadsheet in an industry run by ignorant holding company bean counters.
Yep. Literally the last two agency presidents I worked for were let go.
