@Jake Vander Linden, you joke, but I've worked on 2 pitches where someone on the pitch team had a heart attack a few days before the pitch. One of them died. This industry is not healthy.

For many, nowadays, given the expansion of marketing and creative positions on the client side, that will be the answer. The fact that the ANA announced this week that there will be a dedicated in-house agency conference next spring (which will get a lot of attendees & a lot of coverage), tells you something about the energy in that sector. ACD1 / AD1 - Innovation consulting. As in, working with CTOs / CIOs for large companies that have a mandate to be "innovative" but actually have no idea what that means or how to implement it. I got recruited for the job - I wish I could give more useful advice on how to find that path but my particular story probably isn't that helpful.
However, it's worth noting that many traditional consultancies are expanding their footprints in advertising / marketing. Moving to one of their agencies (Heat, etc.) Could be a good way to get a foot in the door with the consulting side of the business.
