Yeah, I'm never going to carpool with an attorney. I much prefer to go on my own, and I personally don't want to sit there and make small talk or deal with awkward silence.
Oh yeah, you shouldn't feel pressured to carpool with anyone. It's completely up to you and your boundaries. I think you can either make up an excuse or just tell them that you'd prefer to drive yourself for personal reasons. I would be firm and not feel pressured to give in on this one.
I think that if the attorney wants you to carpool with him or her, that it is because they are worried you will be late. Or perhaps they want to discuss the case on the way. I personally would rather carpool than drive myself. I would welcome the time alone with the attorney to formulate a better working relationship.

Incidents can happen at any given time. It would be best to carpool with the attorney just in case something happens you are both together. Another reason is, if you show up at the court later than the attorney that may not go to well for you. Do not lie to your attorney. If you are not comfortable you really need to figure out what makes you so uncomfortable being in a vehicle with the person you work under. You do not have to answer any personal questions. Use that time in the car to check your emails (unless you have been volunteered the driver), or check the legal software text from clients. If your attorney wants to talk about the case as y'all are on your way, then take notes too. Never will know what important information for the case will come up during the drive.
