It would probably depend on the expectations of the role. I personally suck at mental math. It’s like my brain shuts down. But I’ve always been considered one of the stronger members of my teams when it comes to excel / data. That being said, I avoid roles that I know will require me to fly-think through math and instead focus on those where I know the expectation is to leverage tools like excel. Hence the current job in Client Services 😂
Depends how much math the role requires and if you think the individual would be willing and quick to learn.
Second this, if this is not a math based role, we use calculators on daily basis and there is google...
Math - no. Problem-solving - maybe. Account for external factors...potentially interview anxiety or other mental distractions. Not an automatic reflection on their abilities. We all have weaknesses, blind spots, and brain lapses.
