Chicago and New York are definitely the biggest markets for agencies. Quality of life is horrible in winter though.
If all else fails, VCU Brandcenter grads gets snatched up very quickly and you’d get a masters. Their program is fantastic. The top grads are sometimes more capable than people with a couple years of experience.
Brandcenter alum here. The market is HARD, but having the Brandcenter network is really helpful.
I might consider applying for account roles to get your foot in the door. Prove yourself, learn the business and have conversations internally AFTER you’ve done all this about switching to strategy.
I started in a media agency (can’t stress enough how much I hated it) but I think that’s unfortunately the norm. I think my agency has 1 single junior strategist across all US offices. Just try to get your foot in the door, then pivot internally if you can. Or focus on building transferable skills that you can talk about in the next interview.
No one wants to invests in junior strategist but everyone wants a mid-level strategist with 2 years of experience.
Well it can definitely help to know people because a referral can often go a long way. Especially in this job market. This is like the worst time to be looking for a new role in my opinion.
