I am going with a mix of the two on this one. You cannot make that up, but you can always say....thanks, but I'll take manager at EY and not waste another year here. Mic drop
Wtf would you stay if they are stopping your progression. There are people on here that always imply it's for your own good to stick it out and prove yourself. News flash your firm doesn't give 2💩s about you and they'll fire you as easy as the hundreds of applicants for public accounting positions can click apply. You'll probably even be replaced with someone from EY. Do what's best for you. Move and make manager prove you're qualified to be a manager while being one and don't pretend like they're holding you back to help you. GTFO.
Take it. The door's been opened for you and all you have to do is walk right through. Also, this would reinvigorate your career!
We see this happen frequently and it usually doesn't work out . Other firms are willing to promote you to steal you and then in a year, you find out you didn't perform at the level they expected. It would be better to stick it out and get promoted next year when you are already performing as a manager. Unless you are unhappy where you are, it isn't worth throwing it away. Find out what you need to do to make it happen next year and focus on that.
Making a big decision right after you get news you didn't like, isn't the best time to make a decision. It really depends on why you weren't promoted.
If you feel like you were ready, realistically, not just because you wanted it, then I'd get some answers at Deloitte about why you weren't promoted. If it's bs, then say fine, I'll take the EY manager position. I was in the same boat last year. I wanted the manager promo but I knew I wasn't completely ready. I didn't get it then and I stayed and got the promo this year. I don't think one year can sidetrack your career significantly. That said, if I didn't get it this year I would gone with EY 1's advice. Mic drop.
Take the offer. Unless you're on the partner track, it's all irrelevant. Take the title, stay for 1 or 2 years and then bounce to corporate. The title will help and you'll have a talking point about your ability to adapt to new environments. If you felt you deserved manager and it's politics that are holding you back, definitely go.
I would just go. Coming from someone at Deloitte, I'd have a huge chip on my shoulder. Go take manager position there and start working on building business. I'd start working to be on growth/proposal teams and start stealing work..... But that's the way I would be...
Ask why you didn't get promoted. You should have had a discussion at mid-year to talk about the things to work on during the spring that would get u there. Was it your shortcoming or Deloitte's? Ask yourself how strong your support system at DT has been, if it exists. Getting hired into a manager position at a new firm will be very challenging cause you won't have much support but high expectations put on you to be manager material. I even see the last part with inner-firm transfers...the lack of support in a new team.
Would you go if you get it?
What you do is ask your firm to m2m and if not screw them
Yea unless it's early promo and you didn't get it, I would see what e y has to say and salary. Make sure they don't want to give you manager title and then not a sig increase in salary like if you were going to stay one more year at Deloitte.
Take it take it take it!
Do it! Take it!
^ why does it matter how the new firm knows? If they're offering you manager why the hell would you ever choose to stay as a senior? Have some confidence in your abilities. If you feel that your value is higher is worth the manager title, and a firm is willing to give it to you, why would you ever stay with the firm that doesn't value you as you value yourself?
Do you get a bonus to move over?
Do it! Know the feeling. Just got informed that I got passed on promotion too.
It would be interesting to know the level and back story of the people who tell you to do it. I would get advice from someone whose credibility you value. It would also be important to get a good understanding of why you weren't promoted. How does the new firm know you are performing as a manager?
^^amen.
So, another firm knows more about your "worth" than the firm you have been working for for 4-5 yrs. it's all very short sighted. Like I said, it depends on why your current firm didn't promote you...
