Chief
they have a number in mind already - internal promotions tend to be the lower end of the range. In my experience - internal promotions tend to be 10-15% bumps.
You can certainly ask for more but you have little leverage.
Come armed with information and calmly take them through it:
Have you helped them win new business? How much was it worth?
Have you saved them money? Can you put a range on it?
Where have you helped projects run more smoothly?
Have client scores improved in a way you can claim you helped?
Have you added to your skill set? How has this benefited the company?
Any other achievements?

The more you treat it like a reasoned argument, explaining your worth with evidence, the more likely they’ll go back to their bosses and argue your case.
Come prepared with market research (your local market, your direct agency competitors) that supports a higher number. It may work, it may not.
You may hold more power than you would normally, as hiring new talent is very costly and competitive right now. Good luck!
Share your expectations with them.
Thanks! What I’m hearing is, they’ll base the promotion salary on where I currently am, and not on a market-rate band that would be offered to a new hire at that level.
I have the track record to make the case for the higher number, just trying to gain insights on where they’ll likely start to be prepared.
The first mistake is expecting anything. Agencies always find a way to disappoint when it comes to money, my friend.
