Where do you buy outfits for medium-fancy occasions? I can dress for work, or black tie, but I cannot dress myself for holidays, weekends, or gatherings to save my life. I’m in my early 30, if that is a factor.

Had the same realization 2 years ago, am just now nailing down the "relaxed but elevated" wardrobe. The key is getting away from jeans, and using shoes and accessories to anchor the tone.

I ended up with:
- 3-4 dresses that can work w/ nice sneakers, flat sandals, and a casual heel. Think cotton / linen / silk blends, less structured shapes, solid colors or classic prints. Layer a blazer, turtleneck, or sweater w/ belt for winter.
- 2 skirts that could go with a crop top for casual, or a more structured blouse for formal
- 1 pair of comfy non-denim pants to swap for jeans (e.g. Colette pants by Anthro)
- High-quality neutral statement accessories (e.g. suede waist belt, medium gold hoops, silver cuff bracelet, curb chain, textured clutch)
- A couple of 1-3" platform / block heels in neutral colors (tan and black)

Pieces came from Sezane, Mango, Old Navy, Banana Republic, J Crew, Quince, and I spent ~$1000 over 2 years on a mix of full-price, sale items, and thrifting.

My filter was "could I wear this to 2 or more: fancy brunch / rehearsal dinner / baby shower / cocktail reception / theater show / networking event / fancy dinner w/the in-laws?"

One tip that works is to mix some of the more dressed up items with more casual ones. Eg blouse with relaxed jeans; dress with sneakers; even leggings with a more fitting sweatshirt/jacket depending on occasion. The choice of shoes, bags, and styling can make a difference.

It's just that I have all this other experience in things unrelated to the role or things I want to deemphasize in my next role. Is there anything I can do? I only list the last 8 years of experience (as it's most relevant) and don't have my graduation years listed.
