Ban phones 💯
Banning phones helps kids not feel left out. There was a whole episode on this on Huberman podcast. Strongly in favor of removing brain rot (and eye rot) from our schools and letting teachers teach (quality of teachers is perhaps another convo). But there will always be the kids who have parents who dgaf and if those kids are on the phones all day the kids who are doing the right thing end up feeling left out. A ban on phones during school time is the best solution to give kids attention span back
Logically, I would love to say that cell phones have no place in classrooms. I understand how disruptive they can by. However, this is pew pew happy Texas and I kind of want my kids to have easy access to their phones to call for when an active shooter situation arises. That is what makes this debate so challenging for me.
So you are saying your child is incapable of not using their phone all day if they have it with them? Buy them a flip phone with no social media/camera access. No one said if there was an active shooter they would confiscate phones if someone whipped one out. But no phone use during school is not an onerous requirement. If the only way your kid can do that is by not taking a phone to school, they have an addiction problem.
I’m a fan!
I don’t have any kids so I have no horse in this race. That being said, on the surface it sounds sensible. Provided there are exceptions where necessary, for instance those with diabetes will often use a device that links to their phone to notify them of their blood sugar.
There are other devices that can give this information without the distraction of a phone. In fact, a lot of people are getting “dumb phones” on the same number so they don’t have any apps or other distractions when they bring those vs their smart phones. I would agree that as a society we need to start adding landlines back and even pay phones… 🤯
Favor it.
I know a child who recorded his history teacher (PISD) saying horrible racist things last year.
I know another child who recorded his science teacher actively promoting creationism
In both instances the parents moved their children from the schools; seeing these occurrences in video was critical to their decisions.
This policy, while well intentioned, would have prevented either of these instances from being recorded.
I don't know that this is the best approach, nor do I believe an anti-bullying measure is the true rationale.
If you follow the link it says “unavailable.” Regardless, a white man saying that he’s inherently racist because that’s what the insanity of CRT states is the definition of anti-racist and what many idiots are pushing. Can’t win with you people…
Also doesn’t matter if it was religious or just private. Many families would be upset if the teacher didn’t acknowledge that some people believe in creationism, like I said.

This bans phone use in prekindergarten through 8th grade. Kids need to be focused on learning, not on their phones. It doesn't say they can't have them, they can't be using them. Let's don't pretend that students have to have phones to report inappropriate behavior. They have them to record crap they think is funny or cool to post on social media. They scroll through posts in class and are distracted or distuptive. Nothing in this policy says if there is a lockdown, they can't use their phone. It does say if you need your kid, call the office, don't text or call and expect an immediate response. It's not urgent... they will get it after school when they can access their phone.
None of that seems unreasonable. If this school has other behavior problems, that's a separate problem.
Of course a parent would believe their child. School districts won't be moved to action without proof. And, even if there is proof, often nothing happens. My own child was assaulted on campus last year by another student. No punishment bc the kid has a disability; meanwhile my kid walked away with a whiplash injury. The school had every motivation to not act because the district is in hot water with the state over their treatment of students with disabilities.
How does this relate to a cell phone policy? Are you saying they were banned so no one caught the attack on video? No witnesses coorobrated the attack? No consequences for bad behavior is a problem, but it is an adult in charge problem, not a problem caused by a ban on cell phones.

my kids have done just fine in middle school with no phone. their close friends' parents also did not buy them phones in middle school so no one felt left out. phones are definitely a distraction.
Drivers license and cell phone at 16. We made that clear early on. Both are a privelege you earn, not a given right of passage. No wavering.
Love. School!
