Which practice areas that are generally considered undesirable do you think unjustly get a bad rap, and vise versa? What are some overrated/underrated practice areas?

I’m a few years out of law school and thinking about career moves. Any input is appreciate. Thanks!

Personal injury. Most get seen as ambulance chasers, but they are the only ones I know who have private jets.

Ok. Hold my beer,

I think estate planning is generally seen as an easy area that anyone can get into. However, it's highly technical and ever changing based on tax law. It's also one of the highest areas in malpractice. It's not as easy as most think. What attorneys don't understand is that there is a difference between someone who can draft a simple will and someone who can effectively plan an estate.

like

I work at a contract/business litigation firm and we do some estate planning for our more complex clients. IT IS LITERALLY THE MOST CONFUSING THING and I envy those who can put together a flawless estate plan.

Compliance- people think lawyers who work in compliance are bottom tier law students who couldn't pass the bar. When in fact compliance, especially in finance is very lucrative and highly sought after. Plenty of compliance professionals that have law degrees and are licensed, make 6 figures. It requires you to be a lawyer, advisor and CEO.

like

Compliance isn’t necessarily for bottom tier law school grads, but it is not particularly lucrative, considering the three years of schooling (and especially compared to good JD-required jobs). Saying it is “highly sought after” is also a bit of stretch.

I understand you’re a compliance professional, but it’s objectively true that it tends to be the second choice after decent JD-jobs.

For me its family law, but due to the nature of the work, not necessarily because of those that practice it.

I'm in healthcare and technology. I do both litigation and compliance.

Family attorney here too! Recently pivoted from big law because there’s so much potential here, especially if you have language skills.

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.

Any advice on how to deal with a partner/boss who is shifting all responsibility to me with zero guidance, no mentoring, and an unwillingness to discuss the issues? There are an increasing number of passive aggressive comments from the partner who expects to be completely hands off once the case lands on my desk.
