Who is charging day rates vs. project rates? Most of my gigs are day rates, but I’m starting to wonder if I could make more money on a project rate basis.

Curious to hear everyone’s pros & cons of each project time.

I like hourly. I want to make sure I'm paid accurately but don't like to feel 'on-call'

like

You are not on call. Please read the FLSA. Any hour you are required to be on their network during regular office hours is work and they are legally required to pay you for that time.

like

Day rate with an 8hour maximum. 1.5x for overages.

I only work on an hourly rate. Period.

I prefer project rates because I’ve been doing this a while and I am able to get a lot of projects done in less time and therefore I make more money on each project. Hourly rates and day rates are fine until you want to revise them upward. It’s never a slam-dunk. (I do charge an hourly rate for one really large client who gives me 20 to 30 projects a year. It’s just a good arrangement at a rate above what others would pay.)

like

PS: The downside of project rates is that you need a contract for each project and a clear scope so that any scope creep nets you more income.

like

I prefer a day or weekly rate, but most make me bill hourly. Then they try to say that I can't bill for the whole day. I bill.

likesmart

That’s why I bill a day rate. So they don’t try to short me when they’re not competent enough to have work for me to do.

likesmart

I do both! Depends on the project, sometimes a project rate makes the client more comfortable with a tight budget just be sure to have your hours capped in the contract so they don’t scope creep on your time.

I love day rates, but lately I've been thinking about project rates as a way to scale. Not for every client, but with specific parameters. At a certain point I think it's a better reflection of the experience I bring to charge for the value of the product, and not the time spent.

like

Project rate is great if the output is incredibly well defined (right number of rounds/deliverables that you believe the client will actually honor) and you’ve done that type of project before. If either of those is a question mark you’re leaving yourself open to getting screwed compared to a hourly/day rate.

Jamie Brindle (IG and LinkedIn) and Jonathan Stark (Ditching Hourly is his podcast) talk a ton about this topic from every angle.

Thank you for the recos! I will check them out.

Project rates make me the least stressed out. Day rates are great money but I don't like feeling like they own my whole day and night. Hourly I usually get stressed I'm billing too much. I'd rather set a project rate so everyone is happy. They get what they want and I work to get it done on my time.

I am a first year who just started a couple of months ago and I am literally confused all the time. I did some small work for two partners and they loved it, so put me on new deals but the mid levels I am staffed with absolutely hate the work I do. One said the work I did was laughable. I felt bed because I spent over 25 hours on this. I wouldn’t be very bothered but the other Associates in my class are killing it. So I just feel dumb all the time.

Hey freelancers...I usually raise my rates every 2-3 years. For those of you long-time freelancers, how often do you raise rates? And by what percentage? Looking to keep up with market/cost-of-living and yet, not price myself out.
