Why are medical assistants so woefully undervalued? I would make more at a restaurants for fewer hours and significantly less stress. I love what I do and I know I make a difference for patients, but this isn't sustainable as a long term career for me. Do you agree with the way MAs are viewed and paid?

I am sorry that has been your experience. I absolutely respect, value, and have nothing but praise for our MA. She goes above and beyond and does her job better than anyone. She is irreplaceable. I wish they paid her better because she earns and deserves so much more

Medical assistants play a vital role in healthcare by performing a range of clinical and administrative tasks, including taking vital signs, preparing patients for procedures, administering medication, and maintaining patient records. While their role is important, the pay for medical assistants varies depending on factors such as experience, location, and employer. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for medical assistants was $35,850 as of May 2020, which is below the median annual wage for all occupations in the United States. It is possible that the undervaluation of medical assistants may be due to a range of factors such as the high supply of workers in this field, lack of certification requirements, and varying degrees of responsibilities among medical assistant roles.

I have watched a lot of brilliant MAs leave for this reason. It's incredible unfair that you provide such a high value yet are paid peanuts.

100% agree, As an MA I do the same stuff as our RN in fact I have trained her is several areas, I know her pay and it NOT fair and I always get the tasks she doesn't wanna do.

I work full time and have a toddler. I am 3 weeks away from graduating from nursing school. It is tough but it can be done. Lots of sacrifices and no social life for the last 2 years but totally worth it. Scholarships are available as well as tuition reimbursement from your employer (at least most of them). If nursing is what you want to do then do it. If it’s not, then I don’t know what to tell you. The reason she gets paid more is because she went to school and her license is on the line.

Very underpaid and def not worth going to school and cannot support yourself :(

Definitely, but most don't have to decide between rent and food.

I agree. I’m a medical assistant. I’m passionate about what I do. But I’m tired of being looked at as I’m lesser than or what I do isn’t enough. Trust me I have worked with nurses that have put their work on me. Sometimes I feel like I went to school for three years for literally nothing. Trust me I’m making career changes slowly. I thought I had a career path, apparently not.

like

School for 3 years ? You should have gotten a degree not a certificate. Use your knowledge and and experience for a license!

You should see if any ophthalmology offices will train you to be an ophthalmic technician they make more money than medical technicians. It’s very interesting work, and most of them are willing to train Especially if you have experience as a medical assistant.

This is definitely something I'll look into, thanks for the tip.

Yup. But it provides good incentive to move up the career ladder, so there's that...

I agree. I am 44 and I went back to school to become an Medical Assistant. When I graduated and began to look for a job I was blown away! I made more when I was 18. I’ve been offered anywhere from $12-$25 an hour. That’s below minimum wage to start. The $25 is rare and it’s still only $50k a year pre tax. NOT possible on Long Island to survive as an adult. The girls who answer the phone in the front office are offered almost the same wages and haven’t been through as much training. It stinks.

I don’t understand why the doctor’s think that they can talk to us any kind of way. Then we turn around and have to do their portion of work with or lil pay.

like

You are working under Doctor’s license, you can be replaced. No job without doctor. On other hand doctor should be respectable to the staff that keeps office running.

So, for the ones that actually do their job and realize that a nurse delegates tasks to them, yes they are under paid . For the ones that don’t do their job, refuse to actually do tasks delegated to them by the nurse, because “the nurse can do it”, you are way over paid. I can tell you that the work ethics exhibited by some should get them immediately fired (I’ve worked with many like this). It is backbreaking work for those that do it correctly. I was one for years before becoming a nurse.

like

100000000% agree with you!!! It is ridiculous the amount of work we do for the pay and stress we have. I’ve been doing this 8 years not sure I’ll make it to 10 and that’s sad.

like

The most difficult position in healthcare IMO, as they are underpaid for their work but vital to a hospital. A unit can be decimated when just one or two are not on the floor.

like

I've noticed that CNAs don't help each other. Teamwork makes life easier. When I'm turning my patients and washing them as the sole care giver for my High Acuity Unit patients, I ask for help turning. I also tell my CNAs I will help them on the regular floor, but teamwork between CNAs will help releave stress. And shop around for a better paying job. Ask hr or management for a raise. After shopping around you can give them one last chance to raise your pay or leave, but remember the grass

like

The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

I’ve been researching for medical assistant training and I’m confused. I’ve seen degrees and diplomas offered for the same education. Am I overlooking something? I know a CNA coworker who has more on the job training that getting paid more than the MAs. The aide does phlebotomy, electrocardiograms, collects other specimens, and reads cardiac telemetry.

like

They provide vital support to healthcare providers and contribute significantly to patient care, yet they are paid much less than other medical personnel and rarely receive recognition.

like

It's a travesty that medical assistants do not receive more recognition and appreciation for their invaluable contribution to healthcare.

like

100% are with you! I love my job so much but honestly I’m going to talk to my boss about a raise. I mean target is making $15 an hour🤦🏻‍♀️ I have a daughter to provide for and I’m barley making it! As a medical assistant we do A LOT and get paid hardly anything.

like

Seeing you guys post about MA and CNA being underpaid make me wish that your RNs advocates for you guys. They have the power to make a change on your wage if they go after your leadership. The health care leaders listen to RNs and they are afraid of loosing them.
