Because at the end we want our lives to be easier so we load up on the better performing people so we have an easier time reviewing.

Partners: greed. Everyone else: self-preservation

Because the cycle of overworked continues ma at higher levels also. So they tend to go to who they know will get it done and done correctly to make it less time for them to complete their review and less time explaining.

This is the main reason why the PA industry is short staffed. Partners and higher ups that burn out high performers causing them to leave are ruining the PA industry. Instead they should be holding low performers accountable and not punishing high performers with an overload of work. It’s not the high performers problem that the low performers can’t perform!

Bc there is always someone else lined up to replace them

As a SM/manager/senior, would you want to work with someone who does great work or so so work? Most people I know use the same people over and over, even if they are swamped and the so so people have tons of availability. Then these people get overworked. I feel like ever since the large salary increases the last couple of years they’re working us more than ever to get a better return on their investment.

like

Those low or soso or mediocre performers could be great but seniors and above refuse to take the time to invest in them. Cycle they can't break and refuse to break themselves.

like

It takes putting the individual’s needs before your own. Good work begets more work. I have staff who are phenomenal, and it’s a daily effort to ensure they aren’t overloaded because everyone wants to work with the superstars. They manage up and get stuff done so naturally people gravitate because it’s easier on them.

like

Are they burning you out or do you just not know how to say no and set boundaries? 👀

like

Because good accountants don’t necessarily mean good leaders.

like

The better question is why are those willing to work hard, tolerate the workload. You get what you tolerate.

like

This is a great question.

Because they can

So we don’t burn out lol but yeah it’s not fair how the best always the overworked and get paid the same

Maybe you’re working hard for yourself? Because you want to be successful? Have options? Have a career?

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

Why do leaders keep comparing how “good”the new staff/seniors have it because they make more money starting out then they did and working 55 hours is better than the 70-80 hours they used to work? Instead they should compare what options they have available to them and what their goals are.
