Why is it so hard to go from Manager at Big 4 to Senior Manager at Deloitte? Got offered an interview for Deloitte but at a manager role. I’m already 4th year manager. 😞

90% of the time D will bring you in at a level lower or equal to your current level to get accustomed to the way D delivers

likehelpfulfunny

Why would Deloitte just give you a promotion, especially when one of the only things they know about you is that your current firm decided not to promote you?

likehelpful

Why would they if apparently your current firm doesn’t want to give you the promotion

like

Most firms don’t like hiring with promo from my understanding

like

Who cares as long as the comp is there. If you are at KPMG or EY it's honestly a step up.

like

I’ve seen EY hire a level up. It’s pretty much unheard of at D or Pdubs

like

SM direct admits are pretty rare at D. Also, Manager is the fourth level at Deloitte while it’s the third level at other Big4 firms. We are notorious for giving a lower title.

likeupliftingsmart

The question id ask as a prospective employer is, if you’ve been a manager for 4 years then why hasn’t your current firm acknowledged your value and brought you to where you want to be? If you can answer that then it’s up to you to negotiate and put in the hard sell. If you can’t convincingly answer this then negotiate to be top band M. SM as others say is a tough gig, having a year to get a lay of the land and build your credibility up with less KPI pressure is a potentially smart route

like

They are saying M for a reason. You probably dont have the sales experience. And to be honest, entering SM at deloitte is generally not a great idea for most unless they are heavily seasoned. It’s probably the most difficult level. Start at M, get used to culture, understand expectations, and then go for promote. Most people who come in as SMs and aren’t seasoned are out within a year.

like

Senior managers have the most pressure of all positions, if you show that you can handle it as a manager, you most likely will be promoted in your first year at Deloitte. You can always try again after you are promoted at your current job.

like

Deloitte will not hire up a level at that level. Still worth the move if you can command the pay you want and have the confidence in your skills

like

It’s not difficult to make senior, doesn’t look great to get it hopping firms

like

Possible that they’re reading you resume, seeing 4th year manager, and then wondering why you’re leaving? I’d assume you’re not confident in your promotion chances at your current firm, so why would I promote you when I don’t even know you?

like

It's because at that level you are "on your own". It's difficult to get staffed, be included in BD, and be included in the things you need to be successful. SM is the level below Partner/MD unlike other companies where its 2 levels or more below. That means Manager at Deloitte is the equivalent to SrMgr elsewhere. People do get hired in at SM or PPMD but its usually bc of specialty, need, or existing pipeline. All of these are required to be successful along with a network at those levels. Because you mentioned none of these it's likely you don't have them and therefore you could have a hard time meeting your requirements in year 2/3. Deloitte is not in the business of bringing people on to fail. Your focus should be less on the title and more on meeting the qualifications and whether your current company is giving you the opportunity to get the qualifications. If not go to a company where your current skills qualify for the level you want or will invest in giving you the opportunity to grow those skills. It may mean leaving consulting.

OP—how does it feel like a step backwards? If anything a lateral step? Let’s be real Deloitte Consulting is the best of the big 4 (I do not work for Deloitte). What else could you do? MBB? Amazing industry role at google/Facebook? Being a manager at Deloitte is not a step backwards. If you want to be SM for the title, then make it at Deloitte. If you don’t make it in 2 years, then you weren’t ready to be brought in at that level. Make sense?

As a Senior Manager / Associate Partner at Deloitte with 10 yrs consulting and 4
In industry, the position is no joke. Crazy pressure, need to sell, manage, mentor, and compose eminence. On top of that you need a strong network or you’re going to fail out of the gates. Deloitte doesn’t want to set you up to fail by bringing you in as a Senior Manager.

Over the last couple of months I’ve interviewed for a number of jobs and made it to second and third round interviews but never got an offer. My last interview was on Monday and I got feedback that I did not get selected because it did not seem like I was a a team player. Ive got three interviews coming up and l am wondering how I can improve my chances of getting an offer. Any ideas are welcome. I need a new job like yesterday.

Question for yall. How likely is an offer once a company decides to do a reference check? I know I am in the final 2, from context clues in interviews. I just dont want to get my hopes up.

I was just informed after the third round of interviews they’d like at least 5 references, two must be supervisors. My last job was a temporary remote job where I didn’t really interact with my supervisor and the jobs before that were at my family’s business (I do not speak to any of them for serious personal reasons.) Anything before that was grad school and I haven’t kept in contact with any professors from over five years ago. What should I do? 😕

I’ve been promoted with a title but not the responsibilities. I’m job searching and am primarily looking at postings that don’t include my promoted title — I’m not sure how to professionally articulate in an interview why I would be willing to take a “step down”. As I see it, I’m looking for a lateral move because I don’t actual have experience as a true “senior”.
