The definition of "good" and "bad" is subjective.
The people who are promoted have demonstrated their ability to being in clients and play office politics. They may also be good lawyers too.
Being in clients? Damn I guess you do have to sleep your way to the top after all.
Because it’s the bad ones that burn the good ones out …
it’s always been that way…
It’s not gonna change not in law anyway
I was there for 16 years and believe me.
It actually gave me a stress illness, and my doctor told me I had to find a new profession or die… young.
Nice and sensitive… do not go along with the practice of law…
and if you look in the mirror…
and that’s who you are, then you need to be running the other way …
before it makes you ill too 🙏🏻
Good associates have options
A lot lateral to better firms and make partner there too
I see this happen rarely. Many many more to in-house
Good associates care too much or do unnecessarily extra work
Our bad associates aren't making partner, if you mean "bad" as in "unreliable". They may have bad personalities but the people who make partner (at least at my firm) are substantively good at their job and billing high hours.
Plenty of good associates leave because the lack of work/life balance in big law isn't worth the money to them.
