It has to be custom for every single station. Bootstrapping 100+ year old infrastructure is a real challenge.

This. The S train at Time Square has this. Doesn't take up as much space as the barriers that countries have and is easier to add onto our existing infrastructure (not as much of a finial burden either so not as much wasted if we are able to renovate the stations/whole system... even though that'll never happen). And it provides at least some protection.

As difficult as it is, either the city begins building or doesn’t do anything about the lack of barriers. As long as there are no barriers, there will always be people falling over and dying.
