Any advice on how to request a 20% raise? This is my first career out of college. I signed my offer letter knowing that I was being underpaid by 10%, as per the posted position salary. My 1-year appraisal is close and I would like to request 20% based on an increased workload; I would also like to make up for being underpaid my first year.

My dilemma: Many companies only pay up to a 4% raise. However, that will not cover much in this economy, and I would still be still underpaid.

I hear a lot of talk about how claims adjusting is a lot of work and very demanding but I think my current position has prepared me for the challenge. I've been working in the insurance industry (property and casualty) 4 years now as an insurance sales agent. Looking to switch gears a little. How do I get into the claims adjuster field. Looking to make a change and make good money. I currently make about 38k a year base and 1% in commission.
