Definitely, finding short corps near 4% yields at the moment, expect higher as we move forward.
I don’t think iBonds are a serious part of a diversified portfolio or income stream. First, you’re limited to $10,000/year/person. And they don’t generate any income until you cash them in and you are penalized for cashing them in the first 5 years. If you’re planning to gift some savings bonds to kids or grands, then they are better than EE bonds, but that’s about it.
I bonds are a good piece, but as said only $10,000 per year per person. As a planner, it’s worth recommending the $10,000 per year per person. We have a client who has done that not many years. It has become one piece of their overall fixed income portfolio. It depends on their overall financial situation whether this is material. Also, is it worth the effort for the amount, given the cap.
As a planner, I would recommend it primarily to a “do-it- yourselfer, who is organized and likes complexity. Or where I was highly organized and managing their HSA, their 401-k selections, their 529s, their gifting, and many other small things for them, presumably on a fee basis.
I do it personally for me and my family. But I do it partly to stay informed about many options out there. I also have an Excel spreadsheet of the many accounts I have all over of things that I am trying so I can describe them to clients.
