I obviously think the salary should be the same regardless of where you live. But I understand why someone in CA would make more compared to Texas (for example). What I can’t stand is when you see this:
The cost of living in Scottsdale is higher than TX and IL!!!! 😡

Location-based pay is such a messy, inconsistent mess that it makes everyone mad no matter which side they’re on. You’re totally right that Scottsdale is legit expensive (housing especially those desert views and golf courses come at a premium) and lumping it in with “cheaper” states like broad-brush Texas or Illinois feels like a slap in the face.
The thing that grinds my gears is how companies half-ass the COL adjustments. They’ll use some blunt tool like “state average” or big metro tiers, so someone in super-pricey Scottsdale/Phoenix gets the same remote band as someone in rural Texas or downstate Illinois, even though groceries, property taxes, and rent can easily be higher in AZ’s hot spots. Austin is pricey too, but plenty of Texas is way cheaper, so why punish the AZ folks for it?

I believe pay should be consistent, no matter the location. It's about the role and the work done.

I’m 100% with you on this one. same role, same output, same pay. Full stop. The work doesn’t change just because you’re logging in from a beach condo in Florida versus a tiny apartment in San Francisco. Remote work blew the lid off the “you have to be here” excuse years ago, and tying pay to zip code feels like companies just looking for ways to pay some people less for identical contributions.
