Weird as it sounds I actually agree with D1. You don’t have to outright lie, but just let them think you have family money or something. Less upsetting to people’s egos if they can chalk it up to “privilege”, instead of having to come to terms with the fact that they can’t afford similar things because they’re low performers, lazy about their finances, stupid with their money, or have just made poor life decisions.
I do not care who drives what or what boat you have. All I care about is work etiquette and emotional intelligence.
True that. And people who comment on how “expensive” something is probably don’t have the best EQ.
Who cares what other people think. Only you know the struggles that you had hoop through to be successful. As long as you are doing it for yourself and not trying to show off, I wouldn’t give a 2 cent about what other people think.
Exactly! When people rip on my M3 having a BMW emblem I always tell them I bought it for the engine/performance, not the badge.
Chief
Just tell them you have a trust fund
Chief
But they won't understand that because they probably squander all their money. They won't be able to square why they don't have what you have. So just lie.
M3 is my dream car. Can’t wait till I have one
Just drive what you like who cares what they say.
Funny story, I have a F80 M3, about when I bought I was looking something up on the computer at work and another coworker came by and was saying oh sweet car, they expensive, you’re probably can easy afford it if you become a parter. Bro didn’t know what to say after I told him I already have it 😂
I realize this is easier said than done, but who cares what other people think. If you live your life constantly worried what someone is going to think of your choices you’ll drive (no pun intended) yourself crazy. You’re doing what you want to do with your money.
When I was a senior a staff I started with lived at his parents home for 3 years so he could get an M3 (his dream car).
I know when you drive it, you love it. Don’t let anyone ruin it for you. Other people make different choices. Some go on lux vacations, buy designer clothes, etc. Your thing is cars.
You do you, don’t lie, just be yourself.
I mean until you’re a partner, your income doesn’t really vary all that much. People pretty much know exactly how much you’re making. If people think it’s absurd for you to own a particular good, while pretty much knowing what you make, it’s likely because they’re projecting with their own spending palate and not adjusting for the fact that people spend differently, or receive money / support elsewhere.
You do you it doesn’t matter who says what
People are going to make assumptions and dumb comments regardless of what you buy. I bought a used 2013 BMW 328i in 2017 for $19.5k when I was an audit associate and then a managing director said “we’re paying our associates too much” as if it was a crazy purchase. If I bought a brand new Kia that cost more, no one would have said anything.
I don’t like when people who do have something really nice act as if anyone can buy a nice car/house/purse/etc. so I always try to be honest/authentic and say something like “well, we all prioritize different things, I cut down other (xyz) spending so I could save for this.” It usually shuts down further comments because otherwise people will assume you either have family money or you’re in an extreme amount of debt.
Right, or they’re leasing a car and they’re getting a new one every 3 years so they will never actually own their vehicle. It’s pretty wild.
I love luxury items & I’ve worked my a$$ off to afford them. & my SO has a lucrative business. We do very well. I don’t minimize my life for others & I don’t explain my finances to ppl either. So sorry you’re uncomfortable with your own things.
Touché. I’m in tax so I wouldn’t know.
Who cares what they think. Driving a civic or Prius Or rav4 or other “smart choices” is boring af. I’m personally passionate about VW brands (Audi/vw) and have owned some. Couldn’t care less what people think, guarantee I spend less on other stuff than they do.
You do you
Just be honest and say that you like treating yourself to a nice car and hold on to them (if true)…..don’t have to tell them the year of the vehicle and can always say you found a good deal!
I just started getting into cars after getting an Audi A6 and I like driving fast on manual (paddle shifters) on long drives. I love the Audi in every aspect but thinking of an M4 or M5 just bc I want to experience the hype. Would I be missing out in my life if I don’t get an M? Gonna look into the S and RS Audi models but waiting on the new generation refresh
I love audis, i think they are much more subtle and subdued which i like but people like the raunchiness of BMW M models. so i don't think i'd personally be missing out but everyone is different. Audi's are just so precise and refined, and they are good for snow travel as well (quattro). They are bit more of workhorse vehicles IMO than BMWs and Benzs
Never understood the obsession with the M3…weak sauce.
Tell them it’s from your side hustle selling foot pics.
Don’t care about what other says
