Overhead bin space and/or getting kids settled are two reasons that come to mind immediately.
I personally think planes should be boarded by row, starting from the back and/or window seats, then middle, then aisle seats.
Totally agree, but then all those first onboard folks have the audacity to stair and possibly judge you as you lean over them (I’m 5’ tall) to see if there is overhead bin space.

I feel the same as you. Except when flying Southwest. Or when I think my carry on may be forced to be checked.
It’s also boring to sit and the gate and watch everyone in line. It’s boring either way.
Boarding the plane is taking a step towards getting there. It might lead to more waiting, but at least the step was taken. That’s kind of how I see it anyway.
I like to make sure my carry on isn’t gate checked. Getting on first means I know there’s space for my bag. I can get it stored, get my backpack under the seat, get my iPad and such out and connected, etc. just makes for less stress vs trying to do it all the end with a full plane and attendants trying to get the last people quickly seated and buckled so they can leave the gate.
I’d rather be one of the first on so I can get my stuff in the overhead bin and get settled.
Other than anxiety.. people probs board coach early bc they don’t want to check bags and ensure overhead space
