A pension although those are becoming extinct. Back in the day, pensions were much more secure than a 401k due to market volatility
Both are valuable in different situations. For example, a pension is better only if you plan to be there for a longer period or if you highly value having a pension in retirement as opposed to being subject to your own investment decisions. On the other hand, 401k is better if you're inclined to manage your own money, take additional stock market risk, or if you think it's likely you will only be there for a short period.
Pensions have access to a broader pool of investment options, like private equity and other private investments which typically significantly out perform public markets and widely available fixed income which you could put in your 401(k)
I've never even had the option for a pension. But I also have never been in a workplace that I wanted to continue working there for multiple decades. So, I guess I'd rather keep my 401k.
