OH MY GHOShhhh, Team Training is a NECESSITY.
Are you 1099 or W2? I like 1099 because I write all of that off on my taxes……
Building a great team that works together cannot always be on a sales floor or in a zoom call. Building that relationship with others in your team allows you to make it through more strenuous times together, much more efficiently!
I’d say if they don’t allow you to write it off, you would be in every right to ask for compensation for travel being you’re traveling outside of your normal company accommodations.
Team exercises like these help build team synergies. However, in your case as you have a one year old child, the company should be cutting you some slack.
So, I love team training. That said, I do think if it was never in your contract and if it is such a huge distance with circumstances like that, then I would absolutely think you could opt out.
I think it should definitely be paid, but culture is a hugely important aspect of building a successful company and not something to be discounted.
I'm 100% commission and I've worked from home for the past 5 years. I am not paid for my time, so if it's something I want to do then I go. If not, which is most of the time, I don't. There's a side effect to this though- I'm more antisocial every year and it's going to be a very hard transition if I ever join the rest of the humans in a "normal" job.
I'd absolutely hate when fun team building activities are made mandatory
I think the compensation one is a big one - it's unfair to expect everyone to be okay with it, unless you're taking measures to subsidize
I hate team building activities. I spend enough time at work. I don't want to bond with these people outside of work.
I’m so with you on these type of activities. I no longer have young children at home but my priorities are the same, I’m no longer a fan of unnecessary travelling and time is crucial to me at this stage of my life. If you want me to bond put me in a meeting strategizing sales and best practice.
Since you have a baby at home, I would think the company you work for would be understanding.
If you were kid-free or had older kids AND the company paid for it then I would tell you to put on your big boy pants and just do it. As an introvert, I understand the mental toll that these things take. However, it’s important to meet your team face to face. It humanizes the folks you talk with every day.
I just joined a new company and went onsite for training, I've worked remotely for 10 years. There is value in getting to know your team, as well as those who support your team. I'm in sales, so it's great to get to know who my internal resources are, as well as people that I can go to for help. It's harder to develop deep relationships with people without spending time with them. I don't enjoy "forced fun", but I can see the benefit of connecting with colleagues.
