Being able to make data driven decisions is significantly easier today than when I started my career 20 years. But it’s not perfect - as a previous poster commented, data doesn’t lie. But it can be misconstrued, and correlation can be confused for causation - which is where some level of gut decision making based on EQ and/or experience kicks in. And there are decisions that need to be made where data is incomplete, inconsistent, or simply unavailable - and the time and money needed to correct that is prohibitive and may completely hold up decisions from being made. Which is where the ability to make a call based on a combination of the data at hand and “gut instinct” is essential.
Well said.
If you have data you don’t need gut instinct. It’s great to have but data doesn’t lie
For sure agree with EY2 for sure
It's interesting to consider that someone who grew up being able to find information easily online would think differently about making decisions. But I'm not convinced that it's an either/or situation. I suspect as young people get accustomed to being in the working world they would become more confident about trusting their gut.
The only time people should have to rely on trusting their gut is when there is no data. Otherwise what you’re doing is reviewing the data and making an educated decision as to which route to take based upon it.
If you’re “trusting your gut” without data, then you’re just guessing.
If this is not an either or question. Younger people bring passion, energy, and new ideas. Older people bring experience and wisdom. Both are needed to move a company or idea forward.
On behalf of all my xennials like me who bring passion, energy, and new ideas, and all the gen z who can bring some wisdom, lose the agism there, champ.
Gut instinct is really your past experiences and lessons learnt.. I’m a millennial who rely on several factors before making a decision, data being key aspect however it’s also on confidence % that’s when ur logical and analytical skills comes into play.. I honestly never worked with someone who said let’s do it coz I have a gut feeling about it.. we always backed it with research, data, past experiences
Both!
