Complete honesty always wins at the end of the day! It’s not a popular stance in our profession, but truth is better than fiction!
No it doesn’t, A2. Embellishment is fine. But don’t go overboard. Pigs get fed, and hogs get slaughtered, as they say. Don’t be full on George Santos with your resume. Though I am surprised he didn’t get called out earlier.
There is embellishment and there is embellishment. If you pretend expertise you lack, you potentially put clients at risk.
You go your bad self.
How do you embellish? Do you add to job descriptions?
I get it, but lawyers are held to state bar ethics standards. Playing with fire a lil bit.
Honestly, I don’t get it because if I have to embellish, there’s something wrong with me. There’s something I’m either doing wrong or feeling insecure about. I can’t worry about what some employers may or may not do, because they will not be there for me if I get caught.
You’re just showing potential employers your writing chops. Just don’t outright lie — you will be found out.
I’m list Noodling as my extracurricular interest. No one asks me about it.
Chief
What do you do when you’re found out?
Is not a half truth a full lie? If I told a federal court judge a partial truth about my case and pleadings, and the court found out about it a bit later, would I receive a pass? Maybe the court would have mercy on me, which may give me a green light to embellish more. Isn’t that what the world says that our profession is good at? Someone has to change that perception of us!
Exactly - and so my reputation, including my reputation for honesty and trustworthiness, is everything.
OP: it’s people like you who make it harder for the rest of us who actually possess the experience you “embellish” and give our profession a bad name! I hope you get caught!
Just make sure not to lie about anything easily verifiable.
