Yesterday, a coworker said that he thinks ADHD is just an excuse for laziness. It felt like a punch to the gut, especially after a week where I successfully managed a major project, ensuring everything was done on time—a huge effort for me. I wanted to set him straight but held back to keep the peace. How do you deal with similar misconceptions about ADHD at work? How do you educate others without coming off as defensive?

Let him think it’s being lazy. Don’t let him know it’s your superpower.

I punch them in the gut.

How effective has that been so far? 😹

What can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.
"I think adhd is an excuse for laziness".
"Yeah? Well, it's not."

I don't. I just focus on being the best version of me i can be, that's enough, without trying to fix other ppl too lol

Does he know you have ADHD? If he does, he did that on purpose and was spoiling for an argument or wanted to purposefully hurt you. If he doesn’t, you could just tell him, I think you should read up on ADHD a little more before you make such an uneducated statement. It’s an actual neurological disorder and most people that suffer from it especially adults, aren’t even aware. They just think everyone else is better equipped than they are. If you said that in front of someone that has been diagnosed by a doctor, you could potentially offend them. Or you could just stay quiet because you can’t fix stupid.

This is a good response, but if the colleague doesn’t know the OP has ADHD and they don’t want them to know, a response of this depth might tip the colleague off or give them an inkling. So I’d personally just be careful of that.

"Ah interesting. And I think that jumping to conclusions based on outdated or surface-level info is lazy."

Some neurodiverse folks at work and I began an Employee Resource Group (ERG) for body and neurodiverse employees. How big is your employer? You could start one with the help of some other people. You can pm me if you need to ask more questions, but there’s a ton of resources for how to do it on the web. We have 500 employed and the ERG now has 74 employees in it - about half are really active in the group! If you build it, they will come. 😁
When you do it, make sure to invite that knucklehead so he has an opportunity to learn.

Strength in numbers does help. It can also helped send the naysayers silent.

I don’t, because I won’t disclose it to my employer or tell anyone I have it. People saying stuff like that are just ignorant. Even if you try to educate them, there were always be people who won’t listen. I just move on. It might sting at first but honestly it does nothing but diminish what people think of them, so they’re only hurting themselves.

like

The best way to educate the ignorant is NOT to “correct” them, but to be an understanding example.

Start with understanding how it appears as laziness and then inform them of the truth: a study, a well written article, the estimated percentage of the population with ADHD, and well-respected/accomplished people known to have ADHD.

You might get an advocate to change another person’s mind.

At the very least, you’ve made an effort to eliminate ignorance and demonstrated that ADHD people can inform without being defensive—something a lot of neurotypical people can’t do.

How often do you work with them, and how involved are they in your assessments?

I tell them "I wish I had the privilege to think it is, but I no longer have that privilege."

Sometimes I mention that it was likely an evolutionary advantage for our ancestors, it's just in this society it can make things challenging.

I have adhd and used to feel this way my first few jobs out of college and everything felt ‘unfair’ but don’t anymore. I came to this conclusion when I was pregnant and not able to take medication and struggled with a difficult project at work - thinking this way isn’t helpful though and won’t make your life easier.

Instead Try zooming out to the bigger picture and think about what others you work with expect from a teammates and how some adhd traits might come off to others in the place such as peers, managers and clients? Focus on where you can make changes and what you can improve.

For example: managing a project where work is delivered on time is an expectation ( if things are behind schedule there should be proper status reporting & communication) - this isn’t an above and beyond things just a basic expectation of the job

if you feel like helping build awareness, you might ask what made them say that. it depends on how much you wish to disclose and how much energy you have. it’s often one conversation at a time that we can invite important mindset shifts.

perhaps you can shine a light on ADHD at its best.

Do you need to educate them? Don't waste your emotional labor on fixing ignorant people. I'd be tempted to report them as discriminatory but know not all of us feel comfortable with that.

Hi! I’m a young professional with less than 2 years experience, started a new job 1.5 months ago. I’m having quite some difficulties on balancing out my response time to tasks. While I act incredibly fast if not immediately with some, I sometimes take 1-2 weeks with couple of hours worthy ones. Sometimes I ignore, procrastinate or simply other more urgent things come up to increase the delay. Also I work with 3 managers in my team which doesn’t help with expectations nor guidance. Any tips pls?

What types of work accommodations can help people with ADHD? I am starting to believe 35+ of having not managed my ADHD has really negatively impacted me in career growth etc. I'm realizing a lot of things about myself are because of the ADHD. I want better for myself and family but 1. I don't enjoy the same things forever 2. Imposter syndrome and RSD make me believe it's acceptable to start over in new places at low salaries. 3. Typical college won't work for me. 4. I also can't relocate.
