You have 30 seconds to speak to your 20 year old self: would you still advise yourself go into consulting?

No.

I’d tell him some winning lottery numbers, then tell him to invest the winnings in FAANG, and then unload, and short the market in prep for 2008.

Oh and to quietly work with a few people from NJ to “get rid” of a certain NYC property-developing “celebrity”.

I came in as an experienced hire, a bit later in life. To this specific question, I’d tell myself to do what I did- get the specialized skills from industry and join a firm later. For me, consulting has been a great experience. Not easy, but truly something I am thankful to be experiencing.

Much like when someone gets an MBA right after undergrad, I think people don’t get the most of it when they do it too early. Or maybe it seems like they don’t appreciate it. Being able to reflect on industry experience has been great. I notice the people who come up in consulting seem to have a an almost naive consulting-centric view. It takes all types and a career journey is very personal, so this is just my opinion.

My true advice to self would be about having confidence and not taking advice from people who aren’t successful. I would have had faster success if I followed my own interests/curiosity, rather than try to do what other people thought was “right.”

I joined consulting straight out of college, and I totally feel like I should’ve gotten some industry specific experience. I feel lost most of the times

Don’t listen to my over protective parents, just go straight to a 4-year school. I regret staying local and going to a community college for my AA. It was a waste of time and money. I’m now starting my career and I feel behind

Maybe it’s just the people I work with. Cool to know not everyone’s like that

like

100% yes, consulting has taught me so much. Working at so many different clients, meeting exceptionally smart and talented people... not to mention saving up the hotel points!

like

Def the hotel points :)

like

Yes, it’s stressful but the pay and other perks make up for it

like

Yes. And for context I left consulting almost 2 years ago.

smart

no lol

like

Yes but go out more before and during

helpful

No. I’d say do industry then go to MBA as I did and no matter what any career advisor tries to spin, go MBB or bust. It’s not the same anywhere else.

Word.

Yeah I would tell my self to join right out of college. I’d be a SM or MD by now

I’m surprised so many people love their consulting job. I guess the vocal minority is the people who complain. As someone not doing “real consulting” (aka I’m doing risk consulting and not mgmt consulting), is it worth going to get an MBA to switch into? Why do you all love your job so much?

like

I want in. I was always bored with my current and past jobs. Thinking outside the box and solving always changing puzzles is fun to some of us. I’m one of those people. If I’m not constantly challenged I get uninterested in things easily. Pay also is attractive and will allow me to pay off all my debt in 2-3 years while still enjoying life. Exit consulting and you get a “cushy job” making about the same or more specializing in a field and start your family. Can’t really beat that at all

like

Hands down, every-time, yes. KPMG is the big brother I never had. Taught me lessons no one else could have

funny

Law School and IB , but can’t complain
Or more Real Estate

like

Nah. Because of the travel.

like

Sure. It’s pretty fun. The advice that I would give would be to just don’t lock into one client and don’t be afraid to try new things. But yes, I would still be in consulting.

like

Yeah. Aside from travel, consulting is way easier than all the industry jobs I had before I joined. Projects end. Jobs don't. And not all jobs have consultants to help.

like

No, find work that provides so me measure of enjoyment, a life outside of work and be content.

Layoffs. Most big firms say they're sitting on a conservative pile of cash - which I believe is true - but work will obviously not return to pre-COVID levels in the short term, probably not even in the medium term. Are Biglaw layoffs coming?

PwC 🐠, I interviewed with the firm about 6 months ago for a Senior Associate position on the forensics team. I wasn’t extended an offer because the position was given to an internal transfer, at least what I was told. I tried reaching out to the recruiter I worked with last time but the email bounced back and wouldn’t be delivered. I was hoping to see / reapply if the group still was looking for seniors.

In your opinion, would it be best to reapply as a cold application?
