Understanding Cultural Humility Mindset
Call to Action: You may have heard the term Cultural Competency before but is it a realistic in practice? Our call to action this week is to understand the differences between Cultural Competency and Cultural Humility and challenge yourself to change your mindset.
Understanding: Culturally Competency means that you learn about other cultures, control you biases and adapt your behaviors or communication styles to be considerate of people around you. However, it’s like not possible to learn everything about every culture without generalizing a group of people.
Instead, practice Cultural Humility. This means that you are aware of social power imbalances while respecting others’ values or beliefs. Cultural humility challenges you to continue to learn and reflect on your own assumptions. Cultural competency is the goal while cultural humility is a mindset.
Ways to practice Cultural Humility:
1. Recognize that no culture is better than another
2. Acknowledge and reflect on mistakes you’ve made in the past
3. Be honest when you’re not sure about something
4. Learn about other cultures with the awareness that you’ll never achieve a full understanding

I would start off by apologizing for my ignorance about the topic. Ask the person to educate me and chat over coffee my treat. If not email is fine as well and coffee/lunch another day.
