It really varies but I'd say that experience trumps and certificates are not as meaningful as a degree. I say this in my experience trying to get a job with a degree, a certification, and experience. I had different resumes out there and most hits came from the one with just the experience. If people weren't asking for a degree they often thought I was overqualified. And no one seems to care about my PACE certification.
The ones that wanted a degree, it mattered. But I'd also say most did not respond when I had my masters degree on there as well.
1. Sometimes, but not always. I’ve hired both those with degrees and those with equivalent experience. While technically they may be equally competent, I find the college educated are more willing to take on challenging, unfamiliar projects, don’t always need step by step instructions, and can think critically and work through problems on their own. They also tend to be more self-directed, ambitious and seek out opportunities for leadership. This is not a blanket statement; there are always exceptions to each, but this is what I’ve observed with my team.
2. Depends on the roles and what the certification is for. For a typical admin role, certification in something like MS Office programs or projects planning could be equal to or better than someone with a degree. But if it’s a more managerial role and deals more with running the business, a degree would be more valuable. Honestly, having both is what makes you really stand out.
