1) I know that most of you will say that buying an expensive engagement ring is a waste and bad, etc. so let’s start with the assumption that I don’t care and it’s happening
2) does it make sense to finance an engagement ring purchase or buy in cash? If financing, how much would you have to put down for a ~$30k ring? (If you’re upset by this number just replace ring with car or education or wedding or whatever you feel good about lol)

Do not spend $30k. Seriously

likesmart

He is dead set on spending. It is his money. Let him.

Ok so you must adore her/him bc it sounds like you don’t just have $30k laying around. You are considering financing and selling off stock. I guarantee your person will cherish the ring you get as long as you’ve discussed what they like!

like

Thank you! I recently got engaged and asked my partner not to spend over a certain amount, I am in love with mine! So it sounds like this is something you’ve thought long and hard on. I hope you show us the ring when you get it! 😍

If the interest rate you would pay to finance the ring is less than the interest you could earn on the cash in a savings/investment account then financing makes sense. If not pay cash.

I would buy cash. Screw debt.

If you are going to finance, make sure you are paying no more than at least prime rate or your getting screwed. Some or these companies charge 18% or more. Don't fall into that trap. Home Equity, personal loans, all are cheaper.

Cash - you can get a nice ring for 10-20k. Like other guy said she’ll wear it all the time the first couple of years then stop wearing it cuz it’s so flashy or makes her ‘a target’. You buying it for her or yourself? Spending that kind of dough is typically a flex and depending on how your girl is she may or may not like it. Might want to reassess in case she’s not that type of girl that is flashy.

Yeah honestly I took my, now wife, to look at rings way before I proposed and we tried on a bunch of different types and things larger than 2-3 Carrats looked almost stupid for her finger (something to also consider) and she obviously liked it but didn’t like the way it looked on her finger. You definitely should be shopping around and see what you get quoted on just the diamond. Might be worth just buying the diamond and giving it to the designer to place it on the ring you want. I got hooked up so I paid 5-6k for a 10-12k ring because a business partner was close friends with diamond dealer / maker and asked him to take care of me

I think a wedding band should cost a large amount but a percentage of your income like $1K

Ok! Makes sense

Anita we bragadaso post seeking recognition. If you have the cash, why put down payment? Your sick isn’t going to grow bigger by the way.

Who hurt you?

30k ring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exciting right

Put it on credit card for the points, and pay is off right away

Or, put it on a credit card to get points and then: use something like My Chase Plan to pay in installments with no interest or do a balance transfer to a 0% interest card

I went under contract last fall for a new build that will be done later this year. In the contract the seller/builder included a clause that gave them the ability to change the price without cause anytime before the house is complete. This past week they invoked that clause to increase the price by like 7%, supposedly due to material costs. I can either agree to the increase or they return my deposit. My question: is that type of clause even legal? (Cont)

New to US. Which brokers offer best margin accounts? For e.g. I have equities worth $100K and want to trade options. Is there a broker where I can do so without paying more in collateral money - essentially using stocks as collateral, and also not paying margin interest. Was able to do so in London, Hong Kong, and India. However, Robinhood here doesn’t seem to allow it.

Obviously there are draws to both. I’m an officer for what it’s worth so I can realistically retire at O-5, MAYBE O-6.

From a financial standpoint in this market, which would be a better approach in Austin -

1. Buy a ~8-850k house that meets most of our ideal criteria (size, schools, interiors etc) to stay long term

2. Buy a ~5-550k house that’s not ideal with the plan of moving into an ideal home in 4-5 years when kid is ready for school.

How easy is it to get a mortgage for the second home?

Household income - 300k

Happy to add more details as needed
