2 offers. Basically the same salary and bonus offered. One is with JPM and the other is with TD. I'd be leaving BofA. I lean towards TD but am afraid it'll hurt my resume since it's a smaller Bank. Is that valid?

TD is actually gonna be the sixth-largest bank in the country so it’s not just a “smaller bank”, it’s just not a big four. The only difference would be that JPM is an institution that most people come from in finance and so people may be more relatable to you after your career with them, how-ever that shouldn’t be the important part because I can tell you from experience as someone who has worked for TD then for JPM and now back at TD, is that what’s important is how the firm treats you as a person. JPM treats you like you are just a number and honestly will not at all hesitant to let you go, TD cares very much about their employees, TD never looks at termination as an option, this is why TD is very stable, stability is very important for those who don’t have their parent’s trust fund to rely on, trust me when I say it’s not worth exploring the possibility of what can happen for you at other institutions just because. It’s smart to pick somewhere to work where you can truly be you and not have to worry that being your whole self, can get you fired without even so much as an investigation. TD is a beautiful place to work and is not perfect but constantly growing and learning and being here is well worth it especially if you are getting paid well. Many employees have started their careers here and are now executives, some have decided to go elsewhere but they have the same if not better qualities than if they had started at Chase. The question you have to ask yourself is do you want to be in a bank that’s already well established and you just doing boring things all day because there is nothing to establish, or do you want to be a part of a company that is respected, consistently growing and allows you to bring new ideas and new perspectives on growth to the table? This bank has gone from none existent to number six in the U.S. in only 20 years, JPM has been around for centuries and most people experience employee abuse there plus who cares what they are doing as a firm, they have been at the top for so long it’s like a revolving door there and you most certainly won’t be making any kind of difference.

@TD1 thank you for this!! I needed to read this!!

like

No it wouldn’t hurt your resume .. TD is one of the top banks…

like

Go with your gut! It shouldn’t hurt your resume. Is it a lateral move? Would you consider it a promotion? Unless you’re moving down a step, I don’t see how a recruiter would look down on upon you leaving BOA to go to TD.

like

Another thing to consider is the type of work you’re doing and who you’ll work with at TD. I am at a Canadian bank working in the US and I find that the head office moves at a slower pace than the local office. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the view depends on where you are in your career and how much you want to move around to other roles within the company.

like

I don’t feel it will hurt your resume as long as the move makes sense, as others have posted, and isn’t a step down. All things being equal, I would look at other aspects to make this decision - benefits, culture, commute, team, etc.

like

Not at all. TD has an excellent reputation

like

Not at all. Also consider your area of expertise and how each particular role allows you to grow and further develop your skill set.

JPM is a great place, speaking from experience since I spent 5 year a working for the Bank, but due to size each function is really silo'd so it can be hard to learn things that aren't generally within the scope of your role. Smaller banks tend to give you the opportunity to wear many hats which can be great for learning.

Ultimately, I think both places will look good a resume. Congrats and good luck!

like

One thing you might consider is, will any of your bonus be paid in stock? If so, consider what you think the stock of each company is worth. This can make a big difference in terms of your realized compensation in the long run

like

Not necessarily. Smaller banks have their own pros and cons, just like the bigger ones. But it will not hurt your resume in any way.

like

You won't hurt your CV if that's what you're worried about. TD has a good reputation despite being a small bank. Go for it!

like

I would go for TD. That is going to really boost your resume.

A few months ago, there were articles about how Juniper Park/TBWA’s hand sign saved the life of a kidnapped girl in a car. But the next day, reporters asked the guy who called the cops about it and he said he had no idea what the hand sign meant, he actually called the cops because the kidnapped girl kept mouthing “Help me.” I’ve heard of agencies exaggerating sales results or click through rates in case studies, I really hope JP/TBWA isn’t exaggerating about, literally, saving someone’s life.
