Deloitte , Pros & Cons: traditional consultant track VS delivery track Go!
(besides the obvious that one requires BD/sales work & client facing and the other doesn’t).

But, delivery track paid significantly less. Avoid.

D8 this isn’t true in the majority of cases. In fact, in most cases BD codes won’t work, nor will investment codes.

OP - there are a couple of things you could be referring to here.

There are US deliver Center (USDC) folks out of a few select offices like Mechanicsburg, PA. Not a statement about their skill or workload, but they are essentially the domestic version of workers who would otherwise be offshore. My understanding is that they have Firm Initiative requirements which are the things you do beyond your regular project work. This can add a few hours extra onto your responsibilities in addition to your normal 40 hours of work a week.

Then there's Project Delivery Model (PDM). These folks are assigned to work on a specific project and are only afforded a few weeks of bench time before they're let go if the project falls through. Basically, they're hired to work a specific contract - pretty common in federal work where contracts can run for years. No firm initiative requirements for these folks. They are generally expected to be client facing.

In either case pay is meaningfully worse pay and so are benefits relative to the traditional consulting counterparts. Parernity leave jumps to mind as basically not a thing. Because you aren't on the Partner track, you will obviously never make it to partner which is where the money is.

D3 you’re great, seriously. I hope you land on one of my teams - I bet you’re a humble rock star!

D4 sure feel free to message me. I’m not in Hr or anything - just been around forever and have had people on my teams in all career models and was a PDM coach for many years.

Haha how is “go” cringey?

The glory and prestige is in consulting. Never heard refer to USDC as "delivery."

Who told you those "obvious" differences? Back in the day, I was client-facing alongside some USDC folks.

like

Oh, well...things may have changed radically, but we always viewed USDC as a type of ops/staff aug team. Lower comp and career growth opportunities.

Just do the traditional consulting track.

like

By delivery track, do you mean USDC?

like

DC as in data center than yes. Well I think? I just hear it. Called as delivery

like

I think you mean project delivery model not USDC. USDC also has requirements for firm activities / BD.

USDC and PD have less in terms of benefits — time off for things like birth of a child are way more limited in those models compared to core.

If the money is right for you and there is long term potential then delivery model. All you have to focus on is client delivery. None of the other crap

USDC is highly disorganized, depending on which offering you’re in

How difficult is it to switch from usdc or pdm to traditional (analyst, consultant, sc, etc)

It’s hard! But if you have the right advocates and PPMD sponsorship totally doable. (Source: I’ve successfully helped multiple people switch).

Now, depending on where you are in life, the rat race of core consulting might not be for you (as an SM in core, I wouldn’t wish this on anyone...and can’t imagine doing this with kids but many do!)

You have to weigh what you want - more money, prestige, partner someday - Core. If you want a regular schedule and make your kids’ soccer practice (as coach maybe!) or maybe you are an ultra runner and need to train daily...PDM might be perfect for you.

Want to do strong tech work without the pressure of moving up, and lesser firm Contribution requirements (but still some and can move up
At regular intervals when you want)? USDC can be great.

We talk a lot about all the benefits of core, and I get it (I think we should offer family leave to everyone, or at LEAST mat leave to keep pace with the developing world!!!!) but I will also tell
You - I’ve sacrificed a lot. A lot, in my life, for work. By choice. But my life isn’t for most.. I don’t have kids, mg spouse also has an irregular schedule (she’s an ER doc), and our families are all I. Good health.
