9 months ago, I posted on this app that I was leaving FAANG for MBB. Every single responder discouraged me from doing it given worse WLB, less pay per hour worked, etc. I’m here to say that you were all correct. Every single one of you. I would go back in an instant if I could.

OP - boomerang 🪃 back. Nothing wrong with a cycle of rotation. You’re still in A league with another top brand on your CV. Enjoy the ride while it lasts.

I’d venture another guess - your exit will be even better than you can imagine provided you play your cards right and macros don’t tank. Hang in there. 👊

All the best

likeupliftingfunny

If you had the skills to get into FAANG before you should be able to get back in so there’s that. Just make sure you have a good story to tell and don’t wait too long to boomerang back. MBB isn’t easy to get into so be proud of that. We all take the wrong path sometimes…just know when to turn back around.

Sorry, OP. You can still make a change and return to where you came from in FAANG. Reach out to your old manager and ask that they consider you for future opportunities.

Sorry to hear OP. Disruption is always tough to deal with but remember what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. You are stronger, know better, have more experiences and perspectives now. Time to go back to the better tech world now :) think of all of us who are stuck here in consulting and the tech world look over us because we have been here too long and not good enough to switch over. Trust me it happens after a long time here.

I made a post about wanting to leave for MBB last night.. can I DM you and pick your brain

Manager 1 - Here's my responses

1. what role in the PS org do you have?
A. I work as a program manager for an enterprise team out of Chicago. I manage 3-4 clients specifically, and the body of work within them. So i'm not actively managing projects from a daily scrum type of deal, but I do have to report up to the client stakeholders on their current project roadmap, overall budgets etc.. But the other half of my job is solutioning. So working with those same 3-4 clients on building use cases for GCP solutions (AI/ML, monitoring, lift/shift etc.). Its a fun mix of sales/solutioning/management.

2. what was your consulting background?
A. I started off in software sales at VMware. Didn't like the smile and dial kind of thing so I pivoted. I started at an Azure focused startup, I was employee 26, working as a project manager. Built good relationships with the execs, managed 9 of the 14 showcase clients on our webpage, and that firm is now at 250+ and growing. I spent time doing BA work, did some infrastructure stuff on the migrations, and helped out with sales/sales ops as needed. Got some overall good experience, ended up leaving as a Sr. PM (passed on a promotion as I was already in talks with Google). Just had a PE firm take a majority stake in it as well. So TL;DR - boutique Azure consulting as a PM wearing a few hats.

3. are you actively recruiting in PS?
A. I believe so, although my current team is not. If you want to PM me I can ask tomorrow and let you know if we are, and for what roles. I was also interviewing for an engagement manager role as well.

4. how do you find the WLB and where were you before?
A. WLB is about the same but for different reasons. At my old firm I was often involved in strategy talks about growing the practice, hiring, solutioning etc. Commonly was working 60+ hour weeks, but was enjoying it. Google is about the same in terms of overall time expenditure, but (obviously) has better perks overall. Lot of things Google is doing to try and improve WFH life through increased expense allowances etc. Overall Google is better, but its hard to compare a startup with Google.

Happy to answer anything else!

Honestly curious, how has person growth / learning differed for you across the two? One of the main attractions of MBB is an extremely high learning curve. How does it compare to what you saw in FAANG?

like

It's a different kind of learning. At MBB you learn to think, structure complex problems, have rapidly a shallow understanding of everything, sounding credible and highly confident. These skills are great, but plateau rather fast and it's hard to achieve much depth. In tech deep understanding is much more appreciated, and you'll get more of that kind of learning. Combination of the 2 is great, in fact FAANG+MBB is a great brand well recognized

like

But..the prestige..

like

Oh my post was half sarcasm lol I mean yes MBB is still prestigious but you’re right. I think many people see tech roles as a high growth, lucrative option. You can even see it in the MBA hiring trends. Huge shift to tech roles
