This is very believable. But the school was criminal for not allowing the student to eat something.
Admin or guidance should have jumped on that!
MA has free breakfast and lunch for all, but before that, lunch was always given to kids and the parents would get a bill later. No kid was ever allowed to go hungry.

I had a 6th grader standing in the hall and he was doubled over and holding his tummy. I asked him if he was okay. He said "yeah", but he kept his head tucked down. I talked to him and after a few minutes he looked up at me and said, "I didn't have any money on my account, so I couldn't eat". Between me and another teacher we hustled up a bit of food for him to eat. Later we found out that his mom had forgot to send money for his account. I am so upset when the people in the lunch line, don't let kids have food of some sort. I mean look how much food they throw away everyday.
MN has free lunch and breakfast for all kids. It’s criminal to refuse a kid food for lack of funds.
So we shouldn’t be giving away lunch to kids whose parents don’t have any money? Or make the kids suffer and/or embarrass them? We shouldn’t give away food at the end of the day to the two kids and their families who are living in their cars because it’s not our responsibility to make sure the kids are fed?
Do I totally agree with everyone getting free lunches? I think parents who can pay should pay, but the kids shouldn’t suffer.
I’m a retired teacher but we would have to notify the parents or the teacher would pay if necessary. I would never let a child not eat lunch. The school can you a peanut butter sandwich and milk for free.
But now they have a fee fund available from donations to pay for lunch so no child will be punished for not having lunch money.
The child’s teacher should have been notified as well as parents.

That's what it should be at every school. Even rural, country schools like the one where my friend's grandson is.
My school gives free meals. My sons’ school gave them sandwiches
We have free breakfast for everyone, but not free lunch for everyone. We do have ID badge scanners as well as fingerprint scanners so kids can’t put in someone else’s ID. If there are no funds on the account, they basically run a tab.
Good for you. My daughter does the same and I help out and buy her snacks for when the parents don’t come through. Being a retired HS teacher I would have cheese and crackers in my room for students if they needed something in between breakfast and lunch.

Come to find out, somehow the child was putting in the wrong number, and the actually WAS money on the child's account. Apparently this has been happening with other kids there to. Parents are throwing a fit!
They should be!!’

MI has free meals for all students again this year.
same
I am really surprised a school would do that!

I've seen lunch line workers being so hateful to kids. We had one at our school who would make you cringe. Thankfully she was sent to a different school.
That’s so horrible. My school qualifies as a free lunch school so every student can get free breakfast and lunch every day. Before that was a thing our school would still give kids food but they would rack up a massive lunch debt that would follow them through middle school and high school. I have no idea what the ultimate consequence was if you still had lunch debt at the end of 12th grade. I can’t believe the school made him go without lunch that day, it breaks my heart 😭😭😭😭.

Same here. He is such a good kid, and he has been through so much in his life. I can't imagine the embarrassment for a child to have someone tell them they don't have any money and other kids hear it being said.
I don't blame your friend for being mad because I would be really upset if my child was denied food at school. In my opinion breakfast and lunch should be free for all students. They shouldn't have to pay to eat mediocre cafeteria food.
Kids eat there is always food!!!!

We have 2 (traveling) nurses for over 26,000 students, so getting food from the nurse is not an option for students.
Where’s the compassion. MS has free lunch but as a teacher I would have made sure that baby got some food.
First let me say that this should have never happened. How cold must these lunch ladies be
to with hold food from a child, whether he had the money or not.
This does not happen at my school. If a child doesn’t have money in their lunch account, the parents are notified immediately, but the child is still able to buy lunch for the next several days. If the money still isn’t refilled, they are allowed to use a “packed lunch” that consists of a PB&J sandwich (ham if allergic to peanut butter, a pack of cookies and an apple. If their account still isn’t replenished, we have an angel account from which their lunch will be deducted. You can’t expect or blame a kid if the parents don’t replenish the money. If this goes on for a week, the parent is contacted by one of our guidance counselors to see what is going on. I’ve also given students some money if they have nothing in their account. We don’t make any child go without eating.
NO child in my building would be denied food; however, the LUNCH received would not be the same (from what I’ve seen, better), but the child would be fed. ALL students in my building receive FREE breakfast (such as it is )if they want it. Many times teachers will give students funds to purchase lunch, and many teachers keep snacks (healthful and not so healthful;-) in their classrooms just in case.
The cafeteria workers are bound by the rules and regulations of the school board; no money, no lunch; children don’t care about that when they’re hungry. Neither do many of the teachers in my building.
