A mentor once told me that I should always ask for more money. However, I’ve always been too nervous to push for more money and it took me years to follow his advice. I finally got up the courage to try it last week, I already had a job so losing an offer wouldn’t hurt me. I asked for 15% more than this company had offered me and they said yes, instantly. Now I’m wondering, was my mentor right? Have I been cutting my earning potential all this time or was the deal I got last week a fluke?

Not a fluke, your mentor was right. As long as you’re within their range, always ask on the higher end. Most companies expect it, and it shows confidence. I’ve seen too many people undersell themselves and later realize they left thousands on the table just because they didn’t ask. If you feel you're worth more money, ask for it.

I always ask if there is room for negotiation. Sometimes they say no, if they don't I ask for more.

I don't think it's ever a bad idea to ask for more money, because you never know. But I wouldn't think things to go this well for you next time.

It's always a good thing to ask for more. It'll give your new employer a view of you that shows intellectual prowess. While giving you a little bit of leverage. Often a comment of increased production due to better planning can create higher revenues for the company

Your mentor was right. Always negotiate or ask for what you want.

i think it's a case by case basis. sometimes i've negotiated, other times i haven't (if i was desperate or if the add'l money wouldn't have mattered). i've also tried and failed before. i don't think there's a hard and fast rule around negotiation - every situation is different.

So glad you did that!! It could have been a fluke or it could be what you’re rally worth - what matters is now you have this experience and can do it again next time!

Your mentor was very wise! Always ask for more money!

My last therapist keeps coming up in my mind. I left her when I moved to a new area before COVID dug in and frankly it felt like leaving a girlfriend. She also disclosed in the final session that she was a member of AA and knew several of the people I occasionally discussed from the rooms. Her knowledge of the program certainly built trust with me early on, but it has been two years. I discussed it with my current therapist but she’s still in there. Any advice?

Hi 👋🏻 Would love some support here - looking to build out a bonus structure for a Sales Engagement Mgr role - it isn't a typical sales role - this person will be closing deals but not necessarily securing leads. If they will be scoring leads, it will be organic via conferences, partnerships. Of course, we want to encourage and incentivize this person. Potentially giving then an extra 20-50k bonus potential. How do I build this out? Any suggestions or examples would be super helpful. Thank you!!

I used to hate growing up poor. Now I'm still poor but I've learned a lot of really practical things. Not to brag but I'm proud of myself 🥰

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’m currently in a lease admin type role, in commercial real estate. I make a base salary of $50.5K with about $9k in bonuses. I’ve continuously received 7-10% raises over the last 3 years. I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Thanks in advance!

I was approached on LinkedIn for an early career recruiting role in DFW, TX. I don't have direct experience, but I have the university experience/connections from working in career services. This is the first time I've considered work outside of higher education. I said my salary expectations are minimum $90k and that didn't seem to be an issue. Am I asking too little, too much? Im currently going through industry change.
Im a pastry cook with 4yrs experience and the average salary start for this position is now at $22/hr here in vegas, especially in the strip. But cooking/baking is not my passion. So im changing into veterinary medicine and im seeing that the starting rate for a vet tech is around $16-18. Why is that?? Why are people in the vet med industry being paid so low?? Something needs to change. Labor of love aint enough for the people in this job.
