Taking breaks really has been a huge increase for me, even though it seems counterintuitive. Something else is taking apart bigger projects and outlining them into smaller pieces. Helps me keep focusing, also have a feeling of accomplishment on things that seem never ending.
when I went back to graduate school I realized how much working in industry had destroyed my ability to have deep focus and my work ethic in general. I had to completely relearn how to study and focus. I think it's a great idea to apply these same deep focus principles to the job. I have to completely put away phone distractions and exercise a lot of discipline not to look things up online every second they pop into my head, and to just stay focused on the task at hand.
I definitely have had to learn to discipline myself to focus. Our phones are distraction machines, so one thing I do is just put the phone aside and concentrate on my work for a definite stretch of time, usually an hour, or two hours. And then I'll take a break and check my texts, emails, the news, whatever. It's kind of surprising how much you can accomplish when you're only doing one thing. The mental multitasking we've trained ourselves to adopt is ultimately a very bad habit.
Rising Star
One thing I did was schedule the healthy task on my calendar. This was a regular reminder to take a break and go for a short walk. The walk cleared my head and allowed me to focus better on the tasks that needed to be addressed. Another goal I've had this year is to clear off my desk a few times a month. Put all the clutter and paperwork where it belongs so I can be focused on the tasks at hand.
Honestly OP this is something i need to be better about. I almost always work through lunch and then by the end of the day I have a really bad headache because I haven't eaten anything. I need to be better about taking breaks and actually getting up from my desk.
