I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

I guess it depends on your priorities. 20% is a decent amount of money, but actually having a team that you like is really nice. At the same time, I wouldn't worry about things coming across as transactional because it's literally transactional. You're working for money, which is inherently transactional.
The thing you have to be prepared for is they could very well say, “that sounds like a great offer, we’ll sure miss you!”
How did a recruiter reach out with an offer if you haven’t interviewed yet? I would not do this unless you have a firm offer in hand and can show your current firm but generally, these things are very hard to come back from. You have to be prepared to leave if they say see you.
Exactly. Wouldn’t do it unless you have an offer and would be fine accepting it and working at the new place. You’ll essentially be quitting and hoping they counter.
Also think about how salaries work at your firm. If it’s black box and you successfully negotiate a one-time increase, is your firm going to turn around and make that back up in future years by giving you smaller (or no) raises? Are you going to be back at the table in a year or two asking for another raise?

I had similar situations happened to me, my current job and previous job, I was approached by recruiters with much better opportunities when I was happily working for my then current company.. I was not planning to leave at all but I never mind exploring what’s available out there in the market and at the time I figured that the new opportunity is better, I took it and I am marking almost double of my old salary after the two switch, and I am continuing enjoying my job now.
Tough decision. I am totally underpaid as a litigation assistant/paralegal but I have two really great bosses. I’m always open to better opportunities (about $10 to $20k more) that pay what I am worth AND what is comparable with a seasoned assistant. However, I dread leaving my two great attorney I work for and I even though the firm has a lot of things that are just wrong with it, I don’t get micromanaged by my assigned attorneys. We make a great team, but its always in the back of my head that I need to get paid better and by the raise I recently received and realizing the big boss doesn’t value what I bring to his firm (including a lot of billing) I would have to be here for years before I get to the amount I believe I should be at. What to do???
