Coach
Have you assigned him a mentor/coach to maybe show him the ropes and culturally onboard him? Aside from that kind of 1:1 relationship building thing it sounds like you have done everything you could do to make it work.
No mentor/coach. I have been sitting with him in 1:1s and emphasizing communication skills and educating on team norms (e.g. responsiveness, using agendas to structure conversations, team project planning). I may be convinced to be patient on other aspects that I think needs work, but not answering slack messages or just being completely ignorant of important messages where other collaborators are exchanging information is really bugging me.
Has he been on boarded correctly or at all? If there is no on boarding process in place, how do you blame the guy? I was brought into my current position with no on boarding, It was just figure it out. Well I struggled honestly for a while and that time could’ve been so much more productive if there was an on boarding process. If you don’t have one, maybe you can task this person who is struggling because he’ll have a good viewpoint on it hopefully.
It sounds like you need to figure out what’s a will issue and what’s a skill issue. Slack? I’m with you all the way. That’s pretty much always self-taught the other two confluence and Jeera, you have to be a user in order to understand those. Again it sounds like this person’s making excuses however, if you don’t have an on boarding process for things like confluence or Jira, than your people are going to struggle, even if it is a standard in the industry.
How did he obtain a senior role???! That kinda indicates a lead role. If he’s not fulfilling this role, how did he even get it to begin with? And what kinds of excuses is he making?
Yeah he is grossly illsuited for that position. See about re-titling him to a lower position. He clearly cannot perform the duties of a principal.
