I’m in the same boat. I work directly under our GC and have taken on the workload of our AGC when she left, but I’m finding it difficult to advocate that my experience has prepared me for an in-house position.

I have 2 offers to consider. What makes more sense?
Full time role with 3 weeks vacation and benefits or contract opportunity with 20k more in potential salary.

Little background, I have been a loyal employee and have only worked at 1 firm for about 6 years now. Looking for more growth and obviously money.

Need some suggestions on what to consider and any pitfalls that I should be aware of.

Thanks

Has anyone lateraled from big law into an in-house role at one of your firm’s clients? I feel like this happens quite a lot and curious how that process went (did you reach out to them, they to you, etc)? I’m in my second year and staffed on a large client & starting to develop a relationship which I’d like to maintain. I’m thinking about hanging in here for another year or two but then starting to look to lateral. Would love to work for this company if a position is available at that time.

How soon is too soon to quit a job? I took what seemed like a great offer, with competitive pay, a hybrid schedule, and 15% travel. However, I’m about 1.5 months in and the job is miserable. I’m working 50 hour weeks with no breaks to keep up with the demand, there is minimal training or support, I can’t work hybrid yet, I get 24/7 phone calls, and they’ve asked me to travel once a month for the remainder of the year. At this point, I’m only staying for fear of how it will look on my resume.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

After reaching out to the general counsel on LinkedIn, I applied for an in-house job a month ago. I didn’t hear anything. A few days ago the general counsel reached out on LinkedIn and said she did not see my application in the mix but was hoping to and asked if I wanted to meet. I said I did apply, indicated I was interested in meeting, and asked if I could send my materials. She said yes and she would send me some times. I sent my materials and haven’t heard a thing. Any idea what is going on?

Does anyone have recommendations for classes or trainings that helped you gain greater expertise in reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts, particularly sophisticated SaaS agreements? Would love some recommendations so that I can brush up in these areas and feel less like an imposter.

I’m in line for a promotion soon. I came into the company near the top of the VP/senior counsel band and with the expectation that I’d be promoted to AGC after a moderately long period. The pay band for the SVP/AGC counsel starts right about where I’d be with my normal 3% raise, but generally runs 15% higher than my current band. GC will likely try to manage their budget.
