Around there. https://www.levels.fyi/?compare=Amazon,Facebook&track=Software%20Engineer#level-detail
Depends on your level of experience as well, but 300-350 should be reasonable.
These numbers just seem unreal to me, coming from a big4 background
It’s a hard bar to clear. That said, most companies do take into account your background, so don’t be surprised if they try to offer you $250Kish and lowball you given your background.
@WM most tech companies don’t give out base base salaries. My Senior Director’s comp is 200K base + $400K stock a year. It’s because they can factor in stock appreciation without actually having it cost the company anything more.
For example. If you get $150K base + $150K stock year at Amazon, your first year comp can be $300K. If the stock grows by 50% in a year, your comp is now $375K, but they didn’t have to give you anything. Note, negotiate well because Amazon also has a weird vesting of 5/15/40/40 (they give you cash for first 2 years to compensate), but because of the high stock growth most people don’t get any additional base or stocks until promotion.
Thanks so helpful M. Not looking but this does make one think. Out of curiosity do they pay stock out at start or at end of full year? 150k upfront vs 150k end of year makes big difference in Number of shares and money to fund lifestyle, assuming the stock goes up. If at end, why not just use the higher base at consulting firms to buy FAANG MSFT stock instead?
@WM Let’s say I get $600K in shares over 4 years as my offer. They will convert to shares 1 month after I join (different by company) and they’re $1K each share. So I now own 600 shares of Microsoft. There is a 1 year cliff so I get 150 shares at the end of the first year and quarterly after that I’ll get 37.5 shares. I still get whatever gain during the year.
@WM Most consulting firms don’t give that high of a base either, it’s closer split with base/bonus at higher levels. Also most firms will not pay anywhere near Tech firms for most levels.
Thanks Director1 - the recruiter thought it was reasonable too. Got the verbal okay. Just waiting for it to be on paper.
This is unreal
Don't forget that stocks also can fall...
Hindsight is 20/20. Stocks don't always go up... we've just had the greatest bull run in history
Congrats OP!!
Holy smokes! How many years of experience do you have?
Years of experience is 6.5 (all big 4), but that probably doesn’t translate 1-1
Congrats an the impressive offer MSFT. Well done and thanks for sharing with all us 🐠
Agreed SC2 - but I was told that if the stocks don’t make up to the total comp when they vest, they will give additional stock or bonus to make up for it. So shouldn’t be a big deal
@OP - this last point is shocking - so if the stock has halved, they will double the number of shares they give you? Is this in your contract??
Amazon will allocate stocks based on vesting schedule. If price goes down number of stocks will be adjusted to match the amount on your offer. If price goes up they will give you only upto 15% of the profit. This is all until the rsu’s vest, after which it would be like any individual stockholder .
Director 1, is there any cap on how many additional shares they will give you? If they share price reduces to a third of what it was when you got the grant, they will top up 2x? I am asking because it can have potentially huge implications for dilution...
Op - How was your interview experience for this role? Are you a dev doing security work in pwc? Tia!
EY1 - no. I do threat assessments, but not code related. Mostly using STRIDE methodology and able to describe how to build a system securely - end to end. Good knowledge of OWASP top 10, networking fundamentals, etc. interview experience was part technical and part amazon leadership principles. Message me on fishbowl if you want more info.
Hi ,
Thanks for your detailed information. I would like to know if this role was remote work from any where? I how many round did you have after the first phone interview?
